Associate Director, Data Scientist

This role leads AI initiatives and contractor teams across research and development at Gilead Sciences. Responsibilities include managing technical delivery of AI projects, developing and evaluating AI systems for scientific discovery, and establishing solution architectures with a focus on reproducibility and production readiness. The position combines hands-on technical work with strategic oversight of applied AI capabilities.

Responsibilities

• Manage contractor delivery and technical direction for AI workstreams and applied initiatives
• Lead development, evaluation, and deployment of AI solutions across research and clinical use cases
• Design AI solution architectures and guide development of RAG systems and agentic workflows
• Establish and enforce production-quality standards for code, testing, deployment, and documentation
• Partner with product, business, and scientific teams to identify AI opportunities and validate outcomes

Requirements

• PhD in Computer Science, AI, Machine Learning, or related field with 4+ years industry experience
• MS in related discipline with 8+ years relevant experience
• BS in related discipline with 10+ years relevant experience
• Demonstrated expertise in AI, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, NLP, or Generative AI
• Experience providing technical direction to contributors, contractors, or cross-functional teams
• Proficiency with LLM frameworks, RAG systems, prompt engineering, and production AI systems
• Knowledge of responsible AI practices, governance, security, and regulatory compliance
