Universal Stainless & Alloy Products, Inc., established in 1994, is headquartered in Bridgeville, PA, with plants in North Jackson, OH, Dunkirk, NY, and Titusville, PA. Universal Stainless produces semi-finished and finished specialty steel long products and plate including stainless steel, tool steel, bearing steel, gear steel, and aircraft quality low alloy steels for use in a variety of industries. The Machinist is responsible for repairing, assembling, and maintaining various types of mill machinery and equipment. This position supports the safe and reliable operation of manufacturing equipment through machining, repair, fabrication, and preventative maintenance activities.

Basic Responsibilities:

• Repair and assemble various types of mill machinery and equipment.

• Operate commonly used machine tools to manufacture, repair, and modify machine components.

• Operate forklifts and/or overhead cranes to safely move supplies, materials, and equipment as trained and authorized.

• Perform general preventative maintenance on machinery, including cleaning, oiling, and other routine maintenance activities.

• Fit and assemble machine parts and components.

• Construct, repair, and modify various types of tools and machine components.

• Inspect, change, and refit various types of mill bearings.

• Read and interpret blueprints, part drawings, and technical information.

• Prepare shop and field sketches as required.

• Assist with the installation of new equipment and relocation of existing equipment.

• Assist in analyzing equipment failures and make recommendations to help prevent future failures.

• Perform machining and repair work to support mill operations.

• Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe, clean, and organized condition.

• Follow established safety procedures, work instructions, and maintenance practices.

• Work cooperatively with engineering, maintenance, manufacturing, and other plant personnel.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Safety-Sensitive Position

THIS IS A SAFETY-SENSITIVE POSITION. PROPER USE OF ALL REQUIRED PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) IS MANDATORY.

Employees must follow all company safety procedures and PPE requirements for their assigned work area.

Employees must be willing and able to comply with all required PPE, safety procedures, and work practices.

Work Environment:

• Work is performed in a manufacturing environment around industrial machinery, machine tools, steel products, and materials.

• Employees may work in different manufacturing and maintenance areas based on operational needs.

• Employees may work around moving machinery, heavy materials, elevated temperatures, noise, and other industrial processes.

• Ability to work safely around machine tools and industrial equipment is required.

• Employees may be required to work at heights or in difficult-to-access areas as necessary.

• Employees must be able to work extended shifts and varying schedules as assigned.

• Strong mechanical ability.

Experience:

• Previous machining experience in a steel-related or industrial manufacturing environment required.

• Experience repairing and assembling industrial machinery preferred.

• Experience operating lathes, milling machines, grinders, drill presses, boring machines, or similar machine tools preferred.

• Experience with precision measuring instruments preferred.

• Experience with mill bearings and mechanical equipment repair preferred.

Schedule:

• Full-time hourly position.

• 6:00am-4:00pm Monday-Saturday

• Start times may be flexible based on department and operational needs.

• Overtime is required as needed.

• Work schedules may reach up to 72 hours per week based on operational requirements.

• Flexibility to work in different areas and departments is required.

Education/Training:

• Certified Machinist certification preferred.

Previous machine or industrial maintenance training preferred.

• On-the-job training will be provided as required.

• Additional training will be provided on assigned equipment, machinery, and manufacturing processes.

Supervision:

• Generally, works independently and does not require close supervision.

• Position reports to the Manager of Engineering/Maintenance.

Tools & Equipment:

• Lathes.

• Vertical and horizontal milling machines.

• Planers.

• Key seaters.

• Broaching machines.

• Precision grinders.

• Drill presses.

• Boring machines.

• Precision measuring instruments.

• Forklifts and overhead cranes, as trained and authorized.

• Various hand tools and machine equipment.

Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to stand, walk, bend, reach, and work in a manufacturing environment for extended periods.

• Must be able to safely operate machine tools and other industrial equipment.

• Must be able to use hand tools and precision measuring instruments.

• Must be able to safely handle and work around machinery, tools, and heavy industrial materials.

• Must be able to work in various positions and areas of the plant as required.

• Must be able to wear required PPE for assigned work areas.

• Must be able to work extended shifts and overtime as required.

Training & Growth:

Universal provides on-the-job training and opportunities to develop technical skills across multiple manufacturing and maintenance areas. Employees will have the opportunity to expand their machining, mechanical troubleshooting, equipment repair, and maintenance skills while developing knowledge of various manufacturing processes and equipment.
