Machinist I (Cambridge)

Acuren is currently recruiting a Machinist to join our Materials Testing Laboratory team in Cambridge. Location: Cambridge. Salary range: $26.00 to $28.00 per hour, based on qualifications and experience. Responsibilities Under the direction of the Machinist Foreman, provide assistance and support by setting up and operating precision metal cutting and grinding machines such as lathes, milling machines, saws, drills, and grinders, and preparing test coupons, samples or components made from metals, plastics, rubber textiles, and fibreglass, while following Acuren's standard operating procedures and process maps. Conduct maintenance of equipment, including completing scheduled and routine maintenance, logging updates in the database, greasing, oiling, lubricating equipment as required, and cleaning machining cuttings and debris daily. Monitor the need for equipment repair, maintenance, and replacement; identify and report issues related to machine function, safety, and operation to the Machine Shop Foreman. Assist with the preparation of samples by machining test coupons and specimens to dimensional tolerances according to specified standards, cutting and preparing samples under instruction from engineers, technologists, technicians, or NDT personnel, ensuring de‑burned samples, removal of sharp edges, and accurate markings (sample ID, job number, reference information) per quality assurance program. Provide support to Machine Shop operations by offering creative suggestions for jigging and new test procedures, identifying samples for storage and disposal, and ensuring proper handling of extra pieces. Place orders for shop supplies and operate the forklift to move large samples and equipment. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of materials and processes used in industrial applications. Familiarity with equipment: verniers, calipers, micrometers, band saws, angle grinders, surface grinders, manual and CNC lathes, mills, torch plasma cutting. Ability to use hands skillfully and quickly. Mechanical ability to estimate and measure sizes and lengths accurately. Strength, stamina, and proper lifting techniques to handle items weighing up to 25 kilograms. Capacity to work independently on tasks that require concentration and physical effort. Basic computer knowledge. Consistent understanding and compliance with provincial Occupational Health & Safety Acts, ISO systems (e.g., 9001, 1725), and Acuren Safety and Quality Management Systems, policies, and procedures. Education & Certifications High school diploma or equivalency, and enrollment in a machinist apprenticeship program from a recognized technical institution. Job‑related safety certifications considered an asset. Physical Job Requirements & Demands Frequent periods of standing and concentration. Lifting/carrying materials, tools, and equipment up to 50 lbs. Occasional mobility such as reaching, kneeling/crawling, bending/crouching. Use of hand dexterity to operate tools and measure parts. Workplace may be noisy with constant machine sounds; exposure to hazardous machinery, sharp tools, and equipment. Use of personal protective equipment required.
