Job Description
The Construction Materials Technician performs field and laboratory testing, construction observation, and inspection of a variety of construction materials, including soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and steel. This role focuses on accurately conducting tests, clearly communicating results, and supporting geotechnical investigations while maintaining equipment, vehicles, and work areas in safe and clean condition.
Responsibilities
- Perform field and laboratory testing on construction materials such as soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and steel in accordance with established standards and procedures.
- Conduct construction observation and inspection activities to verify that materials and work comply with project specifications and quality requirements.
- Communicate test results clearly and concisely to project team members and other appropriate individuals, ensuring timely and accurate information flow.
- Tabulate and calculate laboratory test results, maintaining accurate records and documentation for reporting and quality control purposes.
- Prepare detailed and accurate field reports that summarize testing activities, observations, and findings.
- Maintain, clean, and organize testing equipment, vehicles, and work areas to ensure safety, reliability, and readiness for use.
- Occasionally assist with drill rig operations during geotechnical investigations, following safety protocols and supporting field crews as needed.
- Follow all relevant safety guidelines and quality control procedures while working in the field and laboratory.
- Support project schedules by being available for extended hours and weekend work when required by testing and inspection demands.
- Hands-on experience with construction materials testing, including soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and steel.
- Proficiency in concrete testing methods and procedures, including work aligned with ACI standards.
- Experience performing soil testing, including nuclear density testing of soils, with a minimum of 1 year of nuclear density testing experience.
- Ability to perform construction materials testing in both field and laboratory environments.
- Skill in tabulating and calculating laboratory results with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to prepare clear and concise field reports that document test procedures, results, and observations.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills for conveying test results and collaborating with project stakeholders.
- Capability to maintain and clean testing equipment, vehicles, and work areas to ensure safe and efficient operations.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable violation history for travel to and from job sites.
- Minimum ACI Field Grade I certification in concrete testing.
- At least 1 year of experience performing nuclear density testing of soils and concrete testing.
- High school diploma or equivalent educational background.
- Comfort working with drill rigs and supporting geotechnical investigation activities.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple testing tasks and documentation requirements.
- Reliability and flexibility to support varying work schedules, including extended hours and Saturdays when needed.
The work environment includes both field and laboratory settings, with testing performed on active construction sites and in controlled lab conditions. Typical workload ranges from 45 to 55 hours per week, with a standard start time around 7:30 a.m. and end time between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Saturday work is rotated, but the technician must be available to work Saturdays when required. During the slower season from December through March, hours generally shift to a Monday through Friday schedule from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 or 5:00 p.m. The role involves travel to job sites, use of testing equipment for soils, concrete, asphalt, and other materials, and occasional work with drill rigs during geotechnical investigations. The environment requires adherence to safety practices, proper use of equipment, and readiness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions as well as indoors in laboratory facilities.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.
