Description of Work Please note that all positions close at 12:00 AM on the posted closing date. You must apply by 11:59 PM prior to the posted closing date. This position is part of the Driver License Associates Program, the hiring rate for this position is $47,255. All Driver License Examiner I (DLE I) recommended candidates will be offered a hiring salary of $47,255. After successful completion of 12 months in the position, the employee will be moved to $49,618 if they have completed all the required training for a DLE, have at least a “meets expectations” on their performance review and does not have any active disciplinary actions. After successful completion of 18 months in the position, have at least a “meets expectations” on their performance review and does not have any active disciplinary actions, they will graduate from the Driver License Associates Program and become a Driver License Examiner for North Carolina with a new annual salary of $51,980. NCDMV is centered on becoming an exceptional customer service organization and a great place to work. Using a data driven methodology, NCDMV deploys staff across its statewide footprint, expands service hours in underserved areas, prioritizes staffing relief for high demand offices, and invests in new or expanded facilities where population growth has outpaced capacity. Commitment to Customers Identify customer barriers and recommend process improvements. Support digital modernization initiatives through testing new workflows and technology. Promote self‑service and alternative service options when appropriate. Participate in continuous improvement activities. Support collection of customer feedback. Maintain operational readiness before opening each day. Participate in cross‑training to improve office flexibility. Examiner I – Driver License Position Overview The Examiner I – Driver License position requires a strong customer‑first mindset, ensuring every transaction delivers timely, respectful, and accurate service while identifying opportunities to enhance service delivery and streamline office operations. This includes anticipating customer needs, recognizing and addressing concerns before they escalate, providing clear guidance to help customers navigate the licensing process, and ensuring North Carolinians receive accurate and timely assistance. Examiner I employees will maintain compliance with all North Carolina laws and will interpret regulations as well as Division policies while collaborating with colleagues and stakeholders to maintain consistency and alignment across regions. The candidate selected for this position will maintain professionalism in all customer interactions and uphold high service standards, which is essential to improving customer satisfaction and strengthening the Division’s reputation statewide. This role requires a customer‑first mindset, ensuring that every transaction delivers timely, respectful, and accurate service. If selected for this position, the candidate will be required to report for orientation and their first week of employment to DMV Headquarters in Rocky Mount, NC. Hotel accommodation will be provided. This position is covered under the REALID Act. Qualifications The candidate must meet the following requirements: Must have a valid N.C. Driver License with no suspensions or revocations within the past 10 years in any state for any motor vehicle‑related offense and no more than 5 active points. Therefore, pursuant to 6CFR, 37.45, the selected candidate will be required to undergo a background check which includes a name‑based and fingerprint‑based criminal history record check. The candidate that is selected for the position will be given a conditional offer of employment that would allow him or her to begin work subject to the results of the background check. Prior to beginning employment, the selected candidate will be required to submit to a name‑based and fingerprint‑based criminal history record check. There will be a cost associated with this process for new employees. No cost is associated with this process for existing DMV employees. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Management Preferences Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC08 $39,244 – $68,679 Management prefers applicants with the following: Experience explaining policy, procedure and/or laws to educate customers or the public. Customer service experience (friendly, enthusiastic attitude who enjoys serving customers) with a diverse clientele. Knowledge of basic computer software that includes database programs, Microsoft Office applications and the ability to quickly adapt to internal systems. Work experience typing using a computer keyboard.
