Job Title: Swim Lesson Instructor
Position Summary
The Swim Instructor at Ashtabula YMCA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swim classes. The Swim Lesson Instructor is responsible for teaching children and adults safe swimming practices, upholding safety rules, ensuring safety of all in class, and putting YMCA core values into all actions and lessons. This position supports the work of the YMCA, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
Essential functions:
- Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly, and supports members and program participants in achieving their goals.
- Builds and maintains positive, effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA; and encourages parent or caregiver involvement.
- Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
- Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
- Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
- Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
- Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
- Trains and supervises class aids as assigned.
- All staff should demonstrate the YMCA core values (honesty, caring, respect and responsibility) in their daily work activities and while representing the YMCA.
Education/Experience Required
- At the minimum, some high school level education is required.
- 2 years experience working with children is preferred.
- 2 years experience in swimming is preferred.
Qualifications:
- Minimum age of 16.
- Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- Certifications: BLS for the Professional Rescuer, Pediatric and Adult Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen Administration certification required within 45 days of hire.
- Obtaining YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification is preferred upon offering.
Physical demands
- Must be able to see, hear and verbally respond to students
- Exerting up to 30 pounds of force
- Lift up to 30 pounds and/or a negligible amount of weight constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move students/objects.
- The worker is subject to noise. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above ambient noise level.
- Frequently subject to environmental conditions- heat and humidity both inside and outside.
- Frequent standing, stooping, kneeling, swimming, and crouching throughout the work shift. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
- Use hands and fingers for fine motor skills frequently.
- Walking on a variety of uneven surfaces and climbing stairs frequently.
- Have visual acuity to determine the safety and security of participants in the program as well as the facility.
- Receive detailed information through sound as well as express through spoken word.
- Read and interpret instructions, procedures, manuals, and other documents.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Working Conditions
- Works indoors in adequate workspace with adequate temperatures, ventilation, and lighting.
- Outdoor work with a variety of settings and a variety of weather, ex: outdoor pools
- Works with average exposure to noise and disruptions. Works with above average stress.
- Normal exposure to dust/dirt.
- Subject periodically to irate individuals and stressful situations.
