Grade Enhancement Mentor/Tutor - Chemistry

Grade Enhancement Mentor/Tutor – Chemistry Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the part-time grant supported Grade Enhancement Mentor (GEM)/tutor position is responsible for providing workshops, small groups, and individual instruction, and working closely with the Department of Human and Life Sciences faculty to promote appropriate academic support. The Chemistry GEM must be able to provide support for students in all Chemistry courses. Essential Job Functions: Develop and conduct science and other appropriate workshops for students; develop instructional materials in science. Meets with students on a regular basis to clarify learning problems and improve study skills through one or more of the following techniques: Facilitation of effective study methods in reviewing class material and predicting test questions. Discussion of the class text. Facilitate tutee's formulation of topics and ideas for their class assignments. Facilitate methods for problem solving. For each applicable course, utilizes the current course syllabus, textbook and supplemental materials as approved by the applicable faculty. Provide instructional assistance to individuals and small groups of students in Chemistry courses. Utilize computers for instructional purposes. Attend grant meetings as appropriate. Work appropriate hours in accordance with existing scheduling procedure, which may include evening, weekend, and possibly off-campus assignments. All other duties assigned by the Principal Investigator. Supervisory Responsibilities: None Minimum Job Qualifications: Education and/or Experience: Bachelor's in a Science related field or Science Education from an accredited institution required; a Master's degree preferred. One year experience teaching or tutoring, preferably at a college level OR equivalent combination of training and experience which would provide similar knowledge and skills. Demonstrated knowledge of Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Knowledge of educational technology expected. Evidence of appropriate worked-related experience relevant to the position. Demonstrable interest in student success. The flexibility, skills, and ability to thrive in an environment with ample workloads, changing priorities and deadline pressure. Customer Service - Makes customers/clients and their needs a primary focus of one's actions; shows interest in and understanding of the needs and expectations of internal and external customers (including direct reports); gains customer trust and respect; meets or exceeds customer expectations. Strategic Focus - Understands how an organization must change considering internal and external trends and influences; keeps the big, long-range picture in mind; builds a shared long-range organizational vision with others. Committed to course of action to achieve long-range goals and influences others to translate vision into action. Other Competencies (skills, abilities, behavior): Must have a philosophy that is consistent with the Mission, Vision, and Core Values of the organization. Strong oral and written presentation skills. Ability to work well independently and as a member of a team. Excellence in organization, decision-making, problem-solving and creating a collaborative environment. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Must be able to read, write and speak fluently in English. Physical Demands: The work environment is an athletic and office setting which requires the ability to travel much of the time, work long hours including evenings and weekends, be physically active, able to lift up to 50 pounds, and have the ability to demonstrate specific skills. Preferred Education: Bachelors or better in Anthropology or related field. Bachelors or better in Biology or related field. Bachelors or better in Botany or related field.
