Introduction The State of Connecticut, Department, Department of Correction (DOC) Unified School District #1 is seeking an energetic professional to teach CDL curriculum to our inmate population in the role of CDL Vocational Instructor split between two of our facilities, Brooklyn Correctional Institution (Brooklyn) and York Correctional Institution (East Lyme).
We are seeking a professional who has experience as a CDL Class A driver or with CDL instruction for 49 CFR Part 391/392. The candidate should be eligible to earn a Connecticut #098 Trade & Industrial Occupations - Vocational Endorsement during their time of employment it they do not hold this endorsement at the time of application. Position highlights
The goal of this program is to provide the skills needed in order to earn the CT Commercial Learner's Permit and pass the skills test. This course stresses commercial vehicle basic operation, safe operating procedures, advanced operating procedures, vehicle systems and reporting malfunctions, and non-driving activities.
Through practice and discussion, students are taught skills in basic vehicle control and mastery of basic maneuvers, as covered in 49 CFR 383.111 and 383.113. Participants earn a CT CLP after passing a test administered by the CT Department of Motor Vehicles.
As a Vocational Instructor with the DOC, you will be responsible for:

- Prioritizing safety and security as it pertains to staff, victims, citizens, and offenders;
- Teaching early intervention, elementary, secondary, special subject, and/or special education curricula;
- Developing educational plans for individuals and groups;
- Setting short and long term goals and evaluating student progress;
- Participating in planning team meetings and case review conferences to assess student behavior;
- Holding conferences with parents or officials concerned with student performance;
- Relating to professionals in ancillary educational roles;
- Maintaining student records and writing reports; and
- Modeling positive teaching practices.
- Experience as a professional CDL Class A driver.
- Experience training or teaching driving and/or CDL preparation.
- An understanding of the different types of learning styles of students and being able to teach to their ability levels.
- The ability to work with a variety of different disciplines throughout the day.
- Working knowledge of classroom routines and disciplines.
- Outstanding personal and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to follow the class schedule as provided by the school administration with the understanding that it may change unexpectedly.

- Plans and conducts a vocational program in accordance with curriculum established for vocational education developed under guidelines established by the State Department of Education-Division of Vocational Education;
- Conducts classes and shop sessions in vocational and occupational subjects;

- Maintains tools and equipment;
- Attends staff and other professional meetings;
- Prepares reports on inmates and/or students as required;
- Performs all the security functions necessary to maintain safety of inmates and/or students, associates and other members of the institution populations;

- Possession of, or ability to get, Endorsement #098: Trade &Industrial Occupations - Comprehensive High School;
- Experience working in a correctional institution, detention center, or similarly structured environment;
- Experience teaching or training a diverse group of people;
- Experience teaching or training groups of people with different levels of education;
- Current CDL Class A License, with 5 years of experience as a CDL class A operator;
- DOT Medical Certificate;
- Driving History with no serious or major violations, suspensions, or downgrades;
- Experience with aspects of CDL curriculum including 49 CFR Part 391 and 392, using a manual and digital logbook, map reading, and route planning;
- Experience with parts, equipment and mechanical operation of commercial motor vehicles;
- Experience with safe driving and commercial vehicle safety techniques and standards; and
- Experience communicating professionally in writing and verbally.
