Respiratory Therapist

Position Overview Department: Scotland Memorial Hospital – Respiratory Therapy Services Status: Full time Shift: Various (United States of America) Qualifications Experience: Minimum – None; Preferred – 1–2 Years of Experience Licensure: Minimum – National Board of Respiratory Care Licensure, North Carolina Respiratory Therapist State Licensure, BLS, ACLS; Preferred – PALS and NRP (to obtain within 90 days of hire) Equipment Experience: Minimum – as applicable to unit; Preferred – as applicable to unit (Specialized Training) Computer Skills: Minimum – Current to date Microsoft Operating System; Preferred – Facility Acquired Information System Other Skills & Competencies: Demonstrates excellent communication (written and verbal), diplomacy, tact, positive problem‑solving approach, organizational skills, team‑work, and articulate communication with patients, customers, and staff. Responsibilities Assessments – Age Specific Competency: Knowledge of human growth and development across the lifespan with ability to meet needs and provide care. Age categories: Young Adult/Adult 18–64yrs; Adult/Middle‑Aged 65–79yrs; Geriatric80+yrs. Critical Thinking Skills Assess situations, consider alternatives, and choose appropriate actions based on etiology, clinical presentation, pathophysiology, indications, contraindications, and hazards of interventions. Assess ventilatory status, pulmonary mechanics, oxygenation, and acid–base balance to implement therapeutic or support modalities considering indications, contraindications, and hazards. Prioritize patient illness severity during high inpatient volumes or increased acuity levels. Planning Develop and document individualized respiratory care plans within 8hours of admission based on assessment findings and patient‑specific needs. Collaborate with interdisciplinary team and patient/family to set realistic respiratory goals, including oxygen therapy, airway clearance, and ventilator weaning strategies. Implementation Administer respiratory medications and therapies as ordered by the physician and outlined in the care plan, following hospital and department protocols. Demonstrate accurate technical skills and operational knowledge in airway management, mechanical ventilation setup and monitoring, non‑invasive ventilation setup and monitoring, aerosol and oxygen therapy, arterial/venous blood gas sampling and interpretation, ECG use, and maintenance of respiratory equipment. Respond effectively to respiratory emergencies, including code blues, rapid responses, and respiratory equipment alarms. Document and communicate assessment findings, therapy outcomes, and changes in patient condition to the healthcare team. Assist in organizing daily RT assignments based on patient acuity and staff competencies and take on leadership responsibilities when delegated. Provide education on respiratory conditions, treatment plans, and discharge instructions to patients and families. Evaluate patient status and interventions, modifying plan with input from the care team and patient/family. Document legibly in the patient record throughout the shift; report critical test results to physicians within approved timeframe. Perform and document required preventive maintenance, quality controls, and calibrations on departmental equipment, maintaining accurate documentation per accreditor standards. Complete and submit variance reports as needed (Incident Reports/EMR Support Tickets/Biomed Support Tickets/Maintenance Tickets). Clean and process all dirty equipment, ensuring readiness for next therapist. Additional Expectations Maintain compliance with all relevant standards (including annual competency review).
