Nature Of Work

61st JUDICIAL DISTRICT COURT

Created by state law in 1968, the 61st District Court has a high-volume caseload. The court has jurisdiction within the City of Grand Rapids, the second largest city in the state and the largest in Kent County. The 61st District Court is comprised of six (6) elected judges, one (1) appointed attorney magistrate, and a dedicated support staff in the Clerk's Office and Probation Department. The 61st District Court Team is committed to providing excellent customer service to the public, and to ensuring the effective and impartial management of cases.

Part-time position. A part-time work schedule will be determined, not to exceed 28 hours per week. A shift start time is 6:30 a.m. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the community and continue or start your career in Michigan's courts. Starting wage is $22.74 per hour. Increase to $23.43 per hour upon successful completion of a 6-month probationary period. Female Lab Technician (Observers must be the same sex to observe court-ordered urine collection) Monitors collection of urine specimens of same sex offenders. Special operational skills, if required by a specific position, are generally acquired through on-the-job training. Tasks follow prescribed or well-established procedures and decisions are generally of a routine nature. Work is performed under close supervision and is reviewed by observation of results obtained.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Operate a computer, printer, facsimile machine, and photocopier.
• Accept cash payments.
• Prepares materials/paperwork for collection of urine specimens.
• Monitors urine collection for misdemeanor and felony probationers.
• Follows the established procedures for specimen collection, including personal observation of defendant.
• Maintains chain of custody and testing documentation.
• Sorts and files cards, documents, reports and other materials alphabetically, numerically, or by other established methods.
• Performs basic clerical tasks such as basic data entry of case information in the case management system.
• Performs bilingual skills if possessed for the public in non-courtroom settings.
• Performs other duties as assigned by a Division Supervisor, Court Administrator, or Chief Judge.
• Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the Court's services to its customers by participating as an active member of a team.
• Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance, including attendance at required meetings.

Minimum Training And Experience

Required Education and Experience

• High school graduation or equivalent.

• Any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Other Necessary Qualifications

Knowledge

• Word processing and data entry computer software.
• Domestic and sexual assault issues and resources.

Ability

• Accept direction and supervision.
• Skillfully and accurately operate a computer, printer, copier and facsimile machine.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions and to communicate effectively in both mediums.
• Accurately perform basic clerical work.
• Work under stressful working conditions and to maintain work at a fast pace.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with court employees and the general public.

Physical Requirements

Work is performed in a lab environment. Positions in the class typically require: reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Move and lift objects less than 25 pounds such as mail, files and supplies. Operate office equipment requiring continuous or repetitive hand/arm movements. The ability to stand, walk, and sit extended periods of time.
