• Orientation: Approximately 40 hours, including virtual, clinical, and unit-based orientation

PICU RN Job Requirements

• At least 2 years of recent Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) nursing experience
• Current Registered Nurse license in Maryland or a valid compact RN license at the time of submission
• Current BLS certification
• Current PALS certification
• Basic EKG knowledge and strong dysrhythmia interpretation and management skills
• Recent experience caring for ventilated pediatric patients and managing acute airways
• Central line and PICC line management experience
• Experience with continuous sedation, IV vasopressors, anti-seizure medications, and pediatric dosage calculations
• Experience with ICP monitoring, arterial blood gas interpretation, chest tubes, and BiPAP/CPAP
• Ability to document accurately in Cerner and float within scope as needed

Pediatric Critical Care Nursing Responsibilities

• Deliver comprehensive critical care to infants, pediatric patients, and adolescents in a six-bed PICU
• Care for patients with respiratory distress or failure, diabetic ketoacidosis, seizures, pain-management needs, and sepsis
• Monitor and manage patients requiring ventilators, high-flow nasal cannula, BiPAP/CPAP, continuous drips, moderate sedation, arterial lines, central lines, and acute airway support
• Perform ongoing assessments, recognize changes in patient condition, and promptly escalate concerns
• Interpret dysrhythmias and arterial blood gases while implementing appropriate interventions
• Administer and titrate medications, including IV vasopressors, continuous sedation, and anti-seizure therapies, according to clinical orders and pediatric dosing standards
• Provide safe, evidence-based care to ventilated pediatric patients and those requiring ICP monitoring or chest tube management
• Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, radiology, rehabilitation, social services, and other members of the care team
• Float to pediatric and neonatal areas within competency and scope when needed to support patient-care operations
• Maintain timely, thorough documentation in the electronic medical record
