Job Title: Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) Clinical Nurse Educator
Job Description
The Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) Clinical Nurse Educator provides high-quality patient care and counseling to individuals enrolled in a Medication Therapy Program, with a strong focus on REMS FDA‑mandated medications. This role combines clinical nursing expertise, patient education, and regulatory compliance to support safe and effective use of specialty therapies. The nurse educator communicates closely with patients and caregivers, promotes medication adherence, documents all interactions accurately, and collaborates with pharmacy support teams to ensure timely and appropriate delivery of specialty medications.
Responsibilities
- Counsel and educate existing patients on REMS FDA‑mandated medications, including reading required statements verbatim to patients as part of the REMS program when applicable.
- Ensure patients and their caregivers understand their current therapy, including indications, dosing, and monitoring requirements, to support safe and effective treatment.
- Promote and support medication adherence by reinforcing treatment plans, addressing barriers to adherence, and encouraging ongoing engagement in therapy.
- Schedule medication refill deliveries and collect copays, when applicable, in alignment with program and regulatory requirements.
- Adhere to contracted and accrediting regulations as specified by drug and program requirements, ensuring compliance with all REMS and specialty drug standards.
- Complete thorough, accurate, and timely documentation using good documentation practices in accordance with industry standards and regulations.
- Discuss potential and current side effects with patients to educate them on treatment expectations, possible alternatives, and strategies to facilitate ongoing therapy adherence.
- Identify and report adverse events (AEs) and product complaints (PCs) to the manufacturer, FDA, and/or other governing authorities in accordance with regulatory and program guidelines.
- Provide specialty drug verification and education, serving as a conduit between providers and patients to support therapeutic longevity and continuity of care.
- Maintain accurate patient demographic information, medical history, and clinical records in compliance with federal HIPAA standards.
- Collaborate with Pharmacy Support teams to ensure timely, accurate, and appropriate delivery of specialty medications to patients.
- Utilize computer systems for data entry, documentation, communication, and reporting, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
- Demonstrate professional phone etiquette and clear communication in all patient and provider interactions.
- Apply attention to detail and problem‑solving skills to address patient issues, resolve concerns, and support high‑quality patient experiences.
- Support the broader care team by sharing insights, contributing to process improvements, and helping the team achieve its mission of delivering a high level of patient care.
Essential Skills
- Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in a compact state or primary licensure in North Carolina.
- Ability to obtain nursing licensure in all states and United States territories serviced within approximately 3 months of employment through supported licensing programs, subject to application guidelines.
- Associate, Bachelor, or higher degree in Nursing, or completion of an accredited nursing diploma program.
- 5 or more years of nursing experience, with at least 1 year of inpatient or outpatient care experience preferred.
- Experience in oncology or oncology nursing in inpatient and/or outpatient settings is highly relevant to the role.
- Demonstrated experience counseling patients and providing education on complex therapies, including REMS or specialty medications.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in clinical assessment, documentation, and follow‑through.
- Proficiency with computer skills, including email, word processing, spreadsheets, and web‑based programs.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to explain complex clinical information in clear, understandable terms.
- Experience with motivational interviewing or similar patient engagement techniques, or willingness to apply these approaches.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret practice standards, professional journals, and technical procedures related to specialty medications and REMS programs.
- Comfort with identifying, documenting, and reporting adverse events and product complaints to appropriate authorities.
- Professional phone etiquette and strong interpersonal skills to build rapport with patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in oncology or oncology nursing across inpatient or outpatient environments, supporting familiarity with complex treatment regimens and side effect management.
- Experience working with Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) programs or other regulated therapy management programs.
- Experience with specialty pharmacy operations, including refill coordination, copay collection, and adherence support.
- Demonstrated problem‑solving skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards of care.
- Comfort working in a metrics‑driven environment and meeting performance expectations related to patient engagement, documentation, and program compliance.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams, including pharmacy support and other clinical professionals.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple patients, follow‑ups, and documentation requirements simultaneously.
- Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and complying with HIPAA and other regulatory requirements.
Work Environment
This role operates in a blended work environment that combines office‑based and remote work. After a training period, and contingent on meeting performance metrics, the nurse educator typically works two days per week in the office and three days per week from home, while the remainder of the team primarily works remotely. Standard hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., supporting a predictable daytime schedule.
