Associate Vice President, Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED) California State University, Long Beach – Southern California: Long Beach Reports to: Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. Classification: Administrator IV. Salary range: $192,000 – $202,208 per year. The Associate Vice President of the Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED) provides strategic vision, oversight, and management of the university’s research enterprise, advancing interdisciplinary research, fostering partnerships, and supporting equitable access to research opportunities across disciplines. Responsibilities Strategic Vision and Leadership Provide leadership and vision for all aspects of the university’s research endeavors. Contribute to the development of a strategic vision for interdisciplinary research and integration with education at undergraduate and graduate levels. Foster interdisciplinary collaboration and address regional workforce and economic development challenges. Support reciprocal partnerships with community and city agencies to co‑identify research needs. Collaborate with the President, Provost, and Deans to determine budgetary priorities aligned with the research strategic plan. Research Administration Oversee ORED and university research operations. Foster new research initiatives and oversee internal research funding allocation. Provide oversight of research centers and institutes. Compliance and Integrity Provide campus-wide leadership in research integrity and compliance. Oversee research compliance and safety, including human subject research, animal care, biosafety, and import/export controls. Investigate and report scientific research misconduct. Student Research and Engagement Sustain the culture of student research by overseeing the Office of Undergraduate Research Services. Coordinate and support on‑ and off‑campus research opportunities for students. Plan and institutionalize events such as the Student Research Competition and the Week of Research. Innovation, Industry Partnerships, Community‑Focused Partnerships, and Economic Development Serve as campus liaison for community‑focused partnerships, industry partnerships, and economic development. Represent the university on regional projects and the President’s Commission on Economic and Workforce Development. Provide oversight of the Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship for the development of public‑private partnerships. Foster innovation, manage intellectual property, and facilitate university‑industry research partnerships. Support innovation and commercialization, protecting intellectual property. Identify and connect faculty and students with industry partners and external grants. Qualifications Required: Earned doctorate with university teaching experience; record of scholarly and creative activities equivalent to a tenured, full‑professor faculty appointment. Experience in higher‑education research leadership with a track record of publications, grant work, and interdisciplinary collaborations. Experience supporting diverse research across disciplines and promoting involvement of diverse students, including first‑generation and low‑income students. Strong leadership and management skills, including budget oversight and strategic planning; experience in research compliance, commercialization, or economic development. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with ability to engage stakeholders internally and externally. Experience promoting equity, inclusion, and belonging through research initiatives or community collaborations. Active involvement in shared governance. Preferred: Proven track record of securing external research funding and managing grants and contracts. Experience advancing faculty and student research, scholarly, and creative activities. Experience fostering equity, diversity, and inclusion within research, innovation, and economic development initiatives. Leadership in creating internal research grant programs aligned with strategic priorities. Experience in the California State University system with extensive knowledge of the CSU research enterprise. Evidence of cultural competence and collaboration with diverse cultural backgrounds. Knowledge of emerging trends and best practices in research and innovation management. Strategic vision and ability to develop and implement initiatives advancing institutional research and innovation goals.
