Assistant Director of Residence Life (Anticipated Opening)

Assistant Director of Residence Life Job Overview Under the direction of the Dean of Residence Life, the Assistant Director of Residence Life has responsibility for supervision of and service to students within all college-owned apartments and houses and off-campus students. The Assistant Director supervises six Graduate Resident Advisers and assists the Dean of Residence Life in the development, management, and assessment of Wheaton’s residence life program. The Assistant Director of Residence Life lives in a campus house on campus. The Assistant Director is a full-time (11-month) position and oversees an $8,000 budget. Duties and Responsibilities Implement the departmental vision and goal areas in the campus apartment and house communities through fostering a caring community, building relationships, and offering passive and active programs. Hire, supervise, and train six Graduate Resident Advisers for the apartments (GRAs). Plan weekly Apartment/House staff meetings. Develop relationships with students and staff and advise those who have concerns by making referrals to appropriate campus resources. Schedule weekly concentrated relationship-building time with students in campus houses. Manage the Apartment/House on duty schedule and be on duty one weekday every other week and one weekend out of seven on a rotating basis with the GRAs to be available for emergencies and lock-outs for the entire apartment and house community. Manage facility and maintenance work orders with Facilities Management and coordinate with Public Safety to address any safety concerns for the campus apartments and houses. Meet weekly with three other RDs and the Dean of Residence Life for support, planning, and problem solving, meet individually with the Dean of Residence Life each week for supervision, and meet regularly with the Residence Life senior staff team. Chair the Residence Life professional development subcommittee. Assist the Dean of Residence Life in holding students accountable to College policies by facilitating student conduct meetings. Assist Dean in managing departmental responsibilities (staff hiring, assessment process, furniture replacement budget, updating residence life documents and policies, year-end closing repairs and updates). Provide vision and oversight for the Shalom Community in collaboration with the Director of the OMD and the OMD GRA including periodically attending Shalom Community meetings. Coordinate care and communication as needed with students living individually off-campus and with Wheaton in Chicago students. Qualifications Master’s Degree in Student Development or related area preferred with relevant experience in Student Development, or in a related area. Applicants with four or more years of Student Development or other human service experience, beyond the undergraduate degree, will be given first consideration. Evidence of Christian character and commitment to upholding Wheaton’s Community Covenant. Knowledge related to sexuality and racial identity development. Clear communication skills. Leadership, management, and administrative skills. Understanding the role of Residence Life in promoting whole person development in students. Approachable and able to relate to students and staff. This position requires a valid driver’s license. Physical Requirements The employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or hear; frequently required to use repetitive hand motion, handle or feel, and to stand, walk, reach, bend or lift up to 10 pounds.
