Police Officer – Lateral Potential Compensation: $128,580 – $163,820* Base Annual Salary: $106,418 – $135,905* Bilingual Pay: 5% Education Pay (up to): 7.5% Holiday Pay: 7.01% Annual Uniform Pay: $1,400 Recruitment: Continuous; applications will be continuously reviewed. About The Position The City of Gilroy is recruiting for the position of Police Officer – Lateral. The Gilroy Police Department, located 28 miles south of San Jose in Santa Clara County, serves a diverse population of approximately 60,000 residents. The department provides 24‑hour patrol services, responds to public safety calls, conducts investigations, enforces traffic laws, and engages in crime suppression and community outreach to protect life and property. Essential Duties Perform mobile patrol or fixed post in an assigned area for the prevention of crime and enforcement of traffic laws and regulations. Investigate and prepare reports on accidents, offenses, and damage to property. Make arrests and take law enforcement action as appropriate. Respond to pages, radio, and telephone dispatches. Note and report traffic hazards; assist in controlling traffic at scenes of emergencies. Give verbal warnings, issue citations, and serve warrants. Work with juveniles and intervene in private or public disputes to protect the public. Appear in court and investigate complaints. Request medical attention for victims, citizens, and suspects when necessary. Interview persons with suspicious actions. Transport prisoners and ride motorcycles when required. Provide first aid and maintain departmental equipment. Work an assigned shift with varied days and/or hours. Conduct follow‑up investigations and report vice conditions. Perform specialized functions when assigned and participate in related training programs. Speak in front of community groups, research law and policies, and train other department members as required. Be subject to recall/call‑out and perform related work as required. Qualifications Minimum of high school graduation or G.E.D. certificate and valid P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate. At least 21 years of age. Pass a physical agility test and meet current P.O.S.T. medical standards. Pass P.O.S.T. background investigation, polygraph, DOJ and FBI checks, firearms clearance, post‑offer psychological evaluation, and medical examination with drug test. Possess a valid California driver’s license required to operate assigned vehicles. Proficient in typical police weaponry. Complete all required department and P.O.S.T. training. Maintain CPR and First Aid certification within six months of hire. Establish and maintain residency within a 45‑minute normal driving time from the Gilroy Police Station within 18 months of hire. Bilingual candidates fluent in Spanish may receive up to 5% bilingual pay after certification. Education Incentive Pay up to 7.5% for qualifying qualifications. Holiday Pay (set at 7.01%) for GPOA membership. Uniform allowance of $1,400 annually for Sworn Peace Officers. Retiree medical contribution of $300 per month. Part of the City of Gilroy PERS Health Program and a pension plan under PEPRA. Leaves and Work Schedule Accrual of 8 hours of sick leave each month. Accrual of vacation: 10 days per year for first 5 years, 15 days after 5 years, 20 days after 15 years. Patrol schedules include 4‑10 or 3‑12.5 shifts with a 10‑hour training day each month. Personal leave: 20 hours per fiscal year. Fitness time off: up to 40 hours per fiscal year.
