Role Overview


We are seeking a highly accomplished Enterprise Architect with 20+ years of deep, hands-on technical experience across enterprise websites, e-commerce platforms, and digital marketing ecosystems. This role will define and drive the end-to-end architectural vision for rebuilding and modernizing large-scale consumer and enterprise digital properties (e.g., edx.org, GetSmarter.com, and related platforms).


This is a senior technical leadership role-not theoretical architecture. You will operate at the intersection of strategy and execution, partnering closely with Engineering, Product, Marketing, Data, Security, and Business leaders to design scalable, secure, and future-ready digital ecosystems that support global growth, subscriptions, payments, personalization, and experimentation.

Key Responsibilities

Architecture & Technical Vision

• Own and define the enterprise architecture vision and roadmap for large-scale websites, e-commerce, and marketing platforms.
• Lead the re-architecture or modernization of complex digital ecosystems, including:
• High-traffic consumer websites
• Subscription and transactional commerce
• Global payment processing
• Marketing technology and personalization platforms
• Design modular, composable architectures that balance speed, scalability, cost, and long-term maintainability.
• Evaluate and recommend build vs. buy vs. partner decisions across the digital stack.

Web, E-commerce & Payments Expertise

• Architect solutions across:
• CMS and Digital Experience Platforms (DXP)
• Headless / composable architectures
• E-commerce platforms (B2C & B2B)
• Subscription management and billing
• Global payments, tax, fraud, and compliance
• Ensure architectures support high availability, performance, SEO, accessibility, security, and privacy at enterprise scale.
• Partner with Security and Compliance teams to ensure PCI, GDPR, SOC2, and related standards are met.

Marketing & Growth Enablement

• Architect integrations across MarTech ecosystems, including:
• Analytics and experimentation
• Personalization and segmentation
• CRM and CDP platforms
• Campaign orchestration and attribution
• Enable data-driven growth, rapid experimentation, and personalization at scale.

Leadership & Collaboration

• Act as a trusted technical advisor to senior leaders and executives.
• Collaborate deeply with:
• Engineering and Platform teams
• Product and UX
• Marketing and Growth
• Data, Analytics, and AI teams
• Mentor and influence senior engineers, architects, and tech leads.
• Drive alignment across teams while maintaining architectural rigor and technical excellence.

Agile & Delivery Alignment

• Partner with Product and Delivery leaders to ensure architecture supports Agile and iterative delivery.
• Translate long-term architectural vision into incremental, executable milestones.
• Participate in PI planning, backlog refinement, and technical design reviews.

Required Experience & Qualifications

• 20+ years of progressive technical experience in enterprise-scale web, e-commerce, and digital platforms.
• Proven experience architecting and modernizing large, complex websites with millions of users.
• Deep hands-on expertise in:
• Web architecture (monolith → microservices / headless)
• E-commerce platforms, payments, and subscriptions
• API-driven and event-based architectures
• Cloud-native platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
• Strong understanding of:
• Performance, scalability, and reliability engineering
• Security, identity, and data privacy
• SEO, accessibility, and global content delivery
• Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Strong experience working in Agile / SAFe / product-centric environments.
