Job Description
Journeyman HVAC Installer – Commercial HVAC Systems
Location: Fort Knox, Kentucky
Company: TeamGOV, Inc.
Employment Type: Full-Time
Project: Federal Military Installation – HVAC Installation and Modernization
Position Summary
TeamGOV is seeking an experienced Journeyman HVAC Installer to support HVAC installation, replacement, and modernization work at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
This is a hands-on commercial HVAC position supporting facilities throughout an active United States Army installation.
The work includes a broad range of systems, including:
- Water-source heat pumps
- HVAC equipment connected to geothermal building loops
- Packaged rooftop units
- Split systems and heat pumps
- Air-handling units
- Pumps and hydronic piping
- Exhaust and ventilation systems
- Ductwork and air-distribution components
- Refrigerant and condensate piping
- HVAC controls and equipment electrical connections
Although many Fort Knox facilities use geothermal or central water-loop systems, this position is primarily focused on the building-side equipment and systems connected to those loops . The selected installer will not be expected to specialize in geothermal well drilling or well-field construction.
We are looking for a well-rounded commercial HVAC installer who can support complete projects from demolition and equipment removal through installation, startup, testing, punch-list completion, and final turnover.
Primary Responsibilities
- Install, replace, and modify commercial HVAC equipment throughout Fort Knox facilities.
- Install and replace water-source heat pumps connected to existing geothermal or central building-loop systems.
- Install packaged rooftop units, split systems, heat pumps, air-handling units, fan-coil units, exhaust fans, ventilation equipment, and related HVAC components.
- Remove existing equipment and prepare work areas for new installations.
- Set, level, secure, and connect new HVAC equipment.
- Install and modify supply, return, outside-air, and exhaust ductwork.
- Install transitions, dampers, diffusers, grilles, registers, flexible connections, and related air-distribution components.
- Install refrigerant piping, condensate piping, hydronic piping, valves, strainers, pumps, fittings, hangers, supports, and insulation.
- Connect building-side HVAC equipment to existing geothermal, condenser-water, or hydronic distribution loops.
- Measure, cut, thread, groove, press, solder, and braze piping using approved installation methods.
- Recover refrigerant and properly evacuate, pressure-test, charge, and commission refrigerant systems.
- Install equipment curbs, roof penetrations, flashing, pipe supports, vibration isolation, and weatherproofing components as required.
- Coordinate crane picks, equipment delivery, rigging, shutdowns, and access requirements with project supervision.
- Install equipment control wiring, disconnect whips, sensors, thermostats, actuators, and related low-voltage components within the employee’s qualifications.
- Coordinate final power connections and controls integration with electricians and building-automation personnel.
- Read and follow construction drawings, mechanical plans, equipment schedules, specifications, submittals, piping diagrams, and manufacturer instructions.
- Lay out equipment, piping, ductwork, and supports before installation.
- Identify conflicts involving structure, electrical systems, plumbing, piping, ceilings, ductwork, and existing building conditions.
- Assist with flushing, purging, filling, cleaning, balancing, and leak testing of water-loop and hydronic systems.
- Support equipment startup, commissioning, functional testing, and troubleshooting.
- Verify temperatures, pressures, water flow, airflow, voltage, amperage, refrigerant conditions, rotation, and equipment operation.
- Complete startup sheets, installation checklists, test records, daily reports, equipment documentation, and project photographs.
- Correct punch-list items and support final inspection and project turnover.
- Protect occupied facilities, furnishings, roofing systems, ceilings, and government property during installation.
- Maintain clean, orderly, and safe work areas.
- Follow Fort Knox safety, security, environmental, access, hot-work, lockout/tagout, and work-control requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Journeyman-level commercial HVAC installation experience.
- Demonstrated experience installing and replacing multiple types of commercial HVAC equipment.
- Experience with packaged rooftop units, split systems, heat pumps, air-handling equipment, ventilation systems, or water-source heat pumps.
- Experience installing refrigerant piping, condensate piping, ductwork, equipment supports, and associated HVAC components.
- Familiarity with hydronic or water-loop systems and the equipment connected to those systems.
- Ability to read and understand mechanical plans, piping diagrams, equipment schedules, specifications, and manufacturer instructions.
- Ability to complete equipment layout, demolition, installation, startup, and testing.
- Ability to troubleshoot installation problems and make sound field decisions.
- Working knowledge of refrigerant recovery, evacuation, pressure testing, charging, airflow, and system startup procedures.
- Ability to safely use standard HVAC tools, pipe equipment, brazing equipment, recovery machines, vacuum pumps, gauges, meters, and testing instruments.
- EPA Section 608 Universal Certification.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Ability to pass required background screening and obtain access to Fort Knox.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a coordinated project team.
- Ability to communicate professionally with supervisors, coworkers, subcontractors, government personnel, and facility occupants.
- Commitment to quality workmanship, safety, documentation, and schedule performance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working on a military installation, federal facility, hospital, campus, industrial site, or other large institutional property.
- Experience with water-source heat pumps or HVAC equipment connected to geothermal or central water-loop systems.
- Experience installing and replacing commercial rooftop package units.
- Experience with air-handling units, pumps, variable-frequency drives, dampers, actuators, and building-automation controls.
- Experience with Trane, Carrier, Daikin, ClimateMaster, WaterFurnace, Bosch, Mitsubishi, York, Lennox, or similar commercial HVAC equipment.
- Experience working in occupied buildings where shutdowns and interruptions must be carefully coordinated.
- Experience supporting crane lifts, rooftop work, rigging, and major equipment replacement.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
- Aerial-lift, forklift, rigging, confined-space, hot-work, or lockout/tagout training.
- State or local journeyman HVAC license where applicable.
- Experience completing government or commercial quality-control documentation.
Project Support Expectations
This position involves more than setting equipment and making connections. The selected installer will support the entire project process and must be prepared to:
- Review the assigned scope before beginning work.
- Confirm equipment, materials, drawings, and site conditions.
- Help develop installation plans and material lists.
- Coordinate equipment shutdowns and temporary service requirements.
- Identify missing materials or field conflicts early.
- Perform demolition without damaging systems that must remain in service.
- Complete installations in accordance with plans, specifications, codes, and manufacturer requirements.
- Participate in inspections, startup, testing, balancing, and commissioning.
- Correct deficiencies and complete punch-list work.
- Maintain accurate records of work completed, equipment installed, and testing performed.
- Support project closeout and final customer acceptance.
Military Installation Requirements
Work at Fort Knox must be performed safely and professionally while minimizing disruption to military operations.
Employees must be able to:
- Follow installation access and security procedures.
- Work around occupied offices, barracks, training facilities, maintenance buildings, and other active government facilities.
- Coordinate work with government representatives and facility occupants.
- Follow approved shutdown and work-control procedures.
- Maintain professional conduct and appearance while on the installation.
- Protect sensitive work areas and government property.
- Respond appropriately when field conditions differ from the plans.
- Perform work that can pass company quality-control and government inspection.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently lift and carry tools, piping, equipment, and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Assist with heavier equipment using approved lifting and rigging methods.
- Work from ladders, lifts, rooftops, mechanical rooms, crawlspaces, ceilings, and other commercial work areas.
- Bend, kneel, climb, reach, stand, and walk for extended periods.
- Work indoors and outdoors in changing temperatures and weather conditions.
- Wear all required personal protective equipment.
- Safely operate hand tools, power tools, piping tools, refrigerant equipment, and testing instruments.
Work Schedule
The normal work schedule will be based on project requirements at Fort Knox. Early-morning, evening, weekend, shutdown, or emergency work may occasionally be required to complete equipment replacements while minimizing disruption to military operations.
Compensation and Benefits
- Competitive hourly compensation based on qualifications and experience.
- Full-time employment supporting a federal military installation.
- Benefits offered in accordance with company policy and applicable contract requirements.
- Opportunity to work on long-term commercial and federal HVAC projects.
- Opportunity to work on a wide range of equipment rather than being limited to one system type.
