Transportation Bus Attendant

The Transportation Bus Attendant is responsible for assisting the bus operator, by attending to the physical needs of the special education children on the bus, especially while the bus is in operation. A bus attendant shall be courteous, patient and appropriately dressed. Essential duties and responsibilities include riding assigned route on a daily bus and special bus trips, attending to the physical, mental, and emotional needs of the special education students, assisting in the loading and unloading of special education students, providing information to bus operators pertaining to problems related to the special education students, and responding positively to supervision and accepting suggestions for improvement. Other duties may be assigned on an as needed basis.

Qualifications: A Bus Attendant must be able to communicate in English both oral and written. Bilingual ability is a plus. The Bus Attendant must be able to communicate successfully with students, parents, school personnel, and the general public. Must be able to respond appropriately to supervision and accept recommendations. Must demonstrate sensitivity and understanding in interpersonal relations with persons of diverse cultures, backgrounds, physical and mental challenges. Must be able to accurately compile data, analyze and summarize information and provide reports to the Bus Driver and Special Education Transportation Supervisor. Education and experience: Must be 18 years or older and in good mental and physical health. High School diploma or a combination of education and experience equivalent to the ability to follow written instructions required. Experience with children, especially special education children in organized activities is required. Valid CPR certification is preferred. A valid first aid course must be completed during the first six (6) months of employment.

Work environment conditions/physical demands/environmental factors include lifting, carrying, excessive heat, cold, and humidity, pushing, excessive dampness or chilling, reaching above shoulders, excessive noise, use of fingers, walking, intermittent standing, protracted or irregular hours of work, operation of motor vehicle, specific visual requirements, specific hearing requirements, and maintaining a high standard of professional conduct.
