Advanced Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist - Magnetic Resonance Imaging Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration Location: Fort Meade, South Dakota Posted: 02-Jul-26 Internal Number: 875145400 Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program allowing up to $200,000 over a period of 1‑5 years, contingent upon meeting eligibility requirements and submitting an application within four months of appointment. Responsibilities Operate MRI, general radiography, fluoroscopy, and bone density modalities. Safeguard the MRI scanning environment, ensuring a continuous safe condition. Observe patient‑safety guidelines as dictated by department and Medical‑Center policies. Contribute to MRI‑section policy development to maintain highest safety and quality standards. Develop, maintain, and improve standardized examination protocols in collaboration with radiologists. Train staff in MRI principles, techniques, and equipment. Explain methodology, principles, and limitations of MRI as a diagnostic tool to patients and staff. Interpret orders and instructions from medical providers under radiologist guidance. Confirm patient identity using name and SSN to prevent misidentification. Provide patients with clear information about examinations to build trust and cooperation. Screen patients for contraindications or risks before each examination. Coordinate contrast‑agent preparation, labeling, and administration as ordered. Maintain competency in IV catheter insertion and contrast injection techniques. Time contrast injections to obtain optimal vascular phase images. Position patients accurately for high‑quality imaging. Adjust MRI parameters to deliver correct exposure for targeted body regions. Use anatomical knowledge to visualize desired patient features. Monitor quality‑control parameters and report deviations. Identify and report equipment issues to the MRSO and biomedical engineer. Maintain equipment malfunction and downtime logs. Interact with manufacturer service representatives to diagnose and resolve equipment issues. Work full‑time Monday‑Friday. Qualifications U.S. citizenship (non‑citizens may be appointed only when no qualified citizens are available). Completion of a full‑time 24‑month diagnostic radiologic technology program accredited by JRCERT or a DOE‑recognized agency, evidenced by a certificate or associate degree. Radiographic credentialing per 42 CFR Part 75: accreditation and federal certification as specified. Certification in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology – Radiography (ARRT R). Advanced ARRT‑MR certification required for MRI assignments. Proficiency in spoken and written English per 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). At least one year of experience at GS‑9 level (advanced diagnostic radiologic technologist) equivalent to the next lower grade level. Technical KSAs for MR: knowledge of radiation protection, advanced imaging software, physics fundamentals, and advanced patient positioning. Reference: For more information on qualification standards— Preferred experience: MRI. Minimum Requirements All basic and advanced qualifications must be met by the close date of 07/10/2026. Physical ability to perform duties, with a pre‑employment evaluation required. Physical Requirements Ability to lift and reposition patients. Endurance to stand for extended periods while operating MRI equipment. Capacity to perform quick and accurate imaging tasks under shifting patient conditions.
