About the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office is a full‑service law‑enforcement agency that operates the Regional Training Center, Dispatch Unit, Crime Lab, Bomb Squad, and County Jail. The Office is managed by Sheriff Yesenia L. Sanchez and supported by the Undersheriff, Assistant Sheriffs, and other leadership. Position Overview Incumbents of the Deputy Sheriff (lower journey level of the flexibly staffed series) are responsible for the following duties: Supervise the work and conduct of inmates in a county correctional institution. Patrol an area and enforce law and order. Receive and serve civil process. Maintain order in courts. Assist with special investigations. Investigate circumstances surrounding deaths referred to the Coroner. Coordinate emergency services programs and volunteer activities under direction. Perform related duties as required. Minimum Qualifications EITHER I: Current enrollment in a California POST certified Basic Academy, with successful completion by the time of appointment. OR II: Successful completion of a California POST certified Basic Academy within three (3) years of application and possession of a POST Basic Law Enforcement certificate or proof of attendance of a POST Requalification Course. Valid California State Motor Vehicle Operator’s license. Minimum age of 21 years at the time of appointment. Legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law. Physical fitness meeting POST approved safety member standards, normal hearing, vision of at least 20/100 unaided with correctable to 20/20, and no color blindness. Knowledge and Skills Read, understand, interpret, and apply department policies, rules, laws, and ordinances related to law‑enforcement work. Write clear, concise, comprehensive reports. Observe and remember details accurately. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Apply good judgment in emergency or critical situations. Identify and address issues, problems, and opportunities. Communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing. Perform routine clerical and record‑keeping duties. Learn and apply rules, procedures, laws, and regulations relevant to the work promptly. Examination Components Work Sample Test Battery (WSTB) Physical Abilities Test (PAT) – candidates must submit a valid PAT score (pass point 320). Scores are valid for one year. Oral examination weighted as 100% of the final score. Background investigation and psychological examination; felony convictions result in disqualification.
