Operations Training Specialist

Summary The Operations Training Specialist is responsible for developing, delivering, and improving hands-on training for core warehouse operations. This role helps new and existing employees understand the work, perform it correctly, and become productive more quickly in areas such as picking, packing, scanning, labeling, quality control, rework, and basic system use. This is a floor-based operations training role, not an HR onboarding, supervisory, or disciplinary position. The Specialist works closely with the Warehouse Manager, supervisors, leads, and experienced team members to support consistent work methods, employee readiness, and practical training materials that employees can understand and use. The purpose of this role is to reduce early turnover, improve new hire productivity, reduce the time supervisors spend on basic skills training, and strengthen overall operational consistency through better training development. Reporting Structure The Operations Training Specialist reports to the Warehouse Manager at an operations tactical level. Internal Qualification Requirement Before working independently in the role, the Specialist will complete a structured internal qualification process. This includes spending significant time learning the core warehouse roles they will train and support, working directly with supervisors, leads, and experienced team members. The Specialist must demonstrate that they can understand, perform, and explain the work before being released to train others independently. This qualification process is expected to take approximately 34 months, depending on operational needs and demonstrated competency. Key Responsibilities Deliver structured, hands-on training for new hires and employees being cross-trained in core warehouse functions.Train employees on core operational skills, including picking, packing, scanning, labeling, quality control, rework, and basic system use.Help employees understand how their work impacts other departments and the overall operation.Create and use clear training blocks that include instruction, practice, observation, correction, and readiness checks.Observe employees during initial live work and provide real-time correction when needed.Complete readiness evaluations before employees are released to supervisors for role-specific nuance, exceptions, and daily performance management.Follow up with supervisors and new employees after handoff to identify training gaps or areas needing clarification.Simplify, create, and maintain practical job aids, checklists, SOPs, and training materials.Identify recurring training-related errors and provide group retraining when needed.Support onboarding, cross-training, peak ramp-up, and temporary or agency workforce training as needed.Partner with supervisors and leads to understand department expectations, common errors, and training needs.Escalate process, workflow, or system issues when training alone cannot resolve the issue.Document training progress, readiness checks, follow-up results, recurring issues, and training material updates. Role Boundaries / What This Role Does Not Own The Operations Training Specialist supports training, readiness, standardization, and training improvement. This role does not replace supervision or department ownership. This role does not own: Employee discipline or performance write-ups.Scheduling, labor planning, or shift assignments.Department output or daily operational results.Long-term employee performance management.HR onboarding, employment documentation, or policy administration.Emergency troubleshooting or reactive firefighting.Individual retraining tied to performance issues when the employee already understands the standard.Department-specific exceptions without supervisor or operations leadership involvement. Supervisors remain responsible for daily coaching, role-specific nuance, performance accountability, and department execution. Qualifications and Education Required Qualifications Minimum of 23 years of experience in training, coaching, or employee development required.Previous training experience in a warehouse, distribution, fulfillment, logistics, manufacturing, or similar operational environment is required.Must be proficiently bilingual in English and Spanish, with the ability to train, explain, clarify, and reinforce work instructions in both languages.Strong hands-on understanding of warehouse or operational work environments.Ability to learn operational tasks directly from supervisors, leads, and experienced team members, then convert that knowledge into clear training steps.Ability to explain work simply, patiently, and consistently to employees with varying experience levels.Strong observation skills and the ability to identify whether an issue is caused by training, process confusion, department nuance, system problems, or individual performance.Comfortable working on the floor in a live warehouse environment.Ability to document training progress, readiness results, recurring issues, and updates to training materials.Strong communication skills with employees, leads, supervisors, and operations leadership.Ability to reinforce standards without taking over supervisory responsibility.Willingness to occasionally flex work hours, when reasonable, to support onboarding and training needs across both shifts. Preferred Qualifications Experience creating or improving training materials, job aids, SOPs, checklists, or work instructions.Experience training employees on warehouse systems, RF scanners, WMS processes, labeling, picking, packing, quality control, rework, or similar workflows.Experience supporting new hire onboarding, cross-training, seasonal ramp-up, temporary labor training, or agency workforce training.Experience working with supervisors or leads to identify recurring training, performance, or process gaps. Education High school diploma or equivalent required.Additional education, certification, or coursework in training, operations, logistics, leadership, communication, process improvement, or adult learning is preferred but not required. Physical / Work Environment This is a floor-based role in a large warehouse environment. The warehouse is somewhat temperature regulated, but temperatures may vary throughout the year and may become hot during the summer months. The role requires regular time spent walking the floor, standing for extended periods, observing live work, demonstrating tasks, and supporting employees in active operational areas. The Specialist must be comfortable working in a fast-paced warehouse environment around equipment, product movement, packing activity, scanning, labeling, and other daily operational workflows. The role may occasionally require flexibility in work hours to support onboarding, training, or follow-up needs across both shifts, when reasonable.
