Job Responsibilities

The purpose of the General Maintenance Technician - Shipfitter is to perform required, planned, and corrective maintenance and repairs to museum ships, buildings, grounds, and piers. These repairs could be structural such as hull or internal bulkhead repair, museum exhibit construction, or general industry repairs on the property. The job duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Performs maintenance and repair tasks that require shipyard type repair skills such as welding, oxyacetylene cutting, plasma cutting, grinding, preparing metals for welding, clean-up of slag and work area, and preparing for paint. Assists with project planning and development.
  • Assists other craftsmen in the performance of their duties when directed by those appointed in charge. Perform Preservation work and maintenance which includes high, vertical surfaces and other remote areas using appropriate scaffolding and manlifts when required. Occasionally functions as a working supervisor for a small work group and/or is required to oversee contractors performing construction and repair projects for the museum. Perform additional duties pertaining to critical structural welding components using acquired fux cored semi-automatic welding certifications per AWS D1. 1, Structural Welding Code - Steel and maintains updates.
  • Adheres to all safety and environmental regulations required by the Agency. Uses hand tools, safety equipment along with job knowledge and experience to carry out tasks to a successful conclusion.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to accomplish the mission of the Agency.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
  • High School Diploma and trade experience directly related to the area of employment. Relevant experience may be substituted for the required diploma on a year for year basis.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
Additional Requirements:
  • Extensive knowledge of, and experience with, welding, metal fabrication, and construction techniques using dissimilar materials.
  • Knowledge of pertinent safety and environmental standards.
  • Superior mechanical aptitude with tools and equipment used in normal museum job tasks as required.
  • Skill in making emergency and general repairs and adjustments to equipment used.
  • Ability to comprehend plans and specifications.
  • Ability to use judgement and initiative to complete routine work without constant supervision.
  • Position may require employee to work evenings, weekends and during emergency situations.
  • Position requires on call shifts and call back.
  • Position requires rigorous physical activity in a shipboard working environment. Incumbent must be capable of climbing vertical ladders, lifting reasonable amounts of weight or using two-man rule for assistance. Safety must be the employees' number one concern at all times.
  • Must have the ability to work at heights and in tanks during repair evolutions is highly desirable.
