Overview The Chief of Police serves as a primary resource and advisor to the University on matters related to law enforcement and is responsible for the comprehensive operations of USU Police. The position is based on the Logan campus, but leads and directs all functions of the University Police on the Main Campus in Logan and the USU Eastern campus in Price, with the goal of providing a peaceful and safe environment for students, employees, and visitors to campus. - Provide vision for the police department, including the establishment of goals and objectives that support the mission of Utah State University.
- Provide leadership in the development, implementation, and ongoing execution of sound public safety and law enforcement practices, policies, initiatives, and actions that promote campus safety and security.
- Develop positive relationships within the university community by meeting regularly with a diversity of student organizations and key university department leaders.
- Direct the law enforcement efforts for the university, including the enforcement of state and federal laws, compliance with relevant university policies, and performance of community service.
- Ensure adequate safety and security for the campus through a proper balance of foot, bike, and vehicle patrol.
- Meet regularly with the Executive Director of Public Safety to review the status of operational plans, receive regular training, and keep abreast of current trends in law enforcement.
- Serve as a liaison between the university and state and local law enforcement agency heads to foster positive relationships therewith, and to identify and facilitate resolutions to common community safety issues.
- Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, public administration, or related field.
- At least ten years of increasing law enforcement experience with a minimum of three years of management and administrative responsibility.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain an FBI Secret Clearance or higher.
- Must have a valid Utah driver license or able to obtain one within a month of start date.
- Utah POST certified as a law enforcement officer, or able to obtain a Utah POST waiver for training received outside the state of Utah, includes passing POST physical training test. This must be completed prior to the agreed start date.
- Experience at an institution of higher education at command level.
- Master's degree in related field.
- Graduate of FBI National Academy.
- A strong and demonstrable record of compliance with the Clery Act and Violence Against Women Act.
