Our current Stroke wards regularly receive excellent feedback from patients and their families about our caring staff. The aim of HASU is to provide holistic care for acute stroke patients, utilising a co-ordinated multidisciplinary approach, resulting in optimal patient outcomes. Excellent communication is vital as we work with a mixture of specialist nursing teams, medics and therapists. We aim to provide an individualised and supportive environment for patients in which to deliver this specialised care for patients following a stroke. The department comprises a 10 bedded hyper acute stroke unit, providing highly acute specialised stroke care with 33 acute stroke and rehabilitation beds. Main duties of the job The role of the stroke specialist nurse will be to provide specialist stroke care to acute stroke patients and to manage stroke patients requiring rehabilitation, working inter­disciplinarily with other professionals to achieve the best outcomes for the patient. The role also involves leadership to ensure the stroke service runs efficiently as well as providing the development of high quality stroke care services. Person specification Qualifications 1st level registered nurse ENB 998/941 1st level degree in nursing/equivalent Experience Clinical audit skills Substantial experience as a senior nurse Knowledge Knowledge of research Awareness of national policy and guidance on stroke/older people Extended scope of practice, i.e. phlebotomy, cannulation, intravenous injection Leadership skills such as negotiating, influencing and persuasive skills Ability to demonstrate the compassionate values and behaviours needed for dignified care Personal Circumstances Ability to work as a member of a team and act as an autonomous practitioner Work independently Excellent communicator, including written, verbal and presentation skills Time management Highly developed interpersonal skills including motivation Other Requirements Willing to undertake teaching and educate other professionals and students.
