Engineer I/II/III

Responsibilities Responsible for providing engineering and project management for sanitary sewer, stormwater, facilities, roadway and other capital improvement projects. Oversees, reviews, and inspects contractor and consultant engineer work to ensure adherence to bid specifications and plans. Acts as project coordinator, ensuring engineering plans and calculations meet required standards. Creates engineered design drawings using AutoCAD, specifications, and schedules. Approves consultants’ and contractors’ payment invoices, ensuring work completed is proportional to payment requested. Performs field inspections and surveys, prepares technical reports, cost estimates, and correspondence. Reviews submitted plans, drawings, and proposals, and assists with citizen requests and plan reviews as needed. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) program in an approved engineering or engineering technology degree is required. Must obtain Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Erosion and Sediment Control Plan Reviewer and Stormwater Management Plan Reviewer certification within 12 months of hire (applicable for certain positions). Engineer II: Minimum two (2) years of relevant industry experience, passed FE exam, and designation as EIT through Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation. Engineer III: Minimum four (4) years of relevant industry experience, registered PE in any of the 50 United States. Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Pre‑employment checks including criminal history, background, and DMV record checks will be required. Skills and Experience Technical expert on construction projects, able to make necessary field changes. Proficiency with AutoCAD. Comprehensive understanding of engineering concepts related to sanitary sewer, water systems, and stormwater construction and design. Familiarity with electrical and mechanical systems related to building construction (preferred). Knowledge of construction management principles and practices. Project management capabilities, able to prioritize and delegate work effectively. Familiarity with local government, land use regulations, and urban planning. Ability to adapt to various work environments (office, construction site, outdoor). Physical Requirements Must be physically able to operate office equipment, engineering machinery and tools (e.g., level, blueprint machine, computer, calculator, drafting utensils).
