Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
About the Role
The Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) plays a critical role in providing specialized respiratory care to patients with acute and chronic breathing disorders. This position involves assessing, treating, and monitoring patients to improve their respiratory function and overall health outcomes. The RRT collaborates closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans. The role requires the ability to operate advanced respiratory equipment and deliver emergency respiratory interventions when necessary. Ultimately, the RRT ensures that patients receive high-quality, evidence-based respiratory therapy to enhance their quality of life and recovery process. Completion and maintenance of Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certifications are required within 6 months to 1 year of hire. These certifications are supported and provided by the organization.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current and valid Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
- State licensure to practice as a respiratory therapist in the United States.
- High school diploma or equivalent; completion of an accredited respiratory therapy program.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Strong understanding of respiratory care principles and clinical practices.
- Advance Life Support (ACLS) certification (within 6 months of hire)
- Ability to lift, push, pull, or support at least 50 pounds, including maneuvering patient beds, oxygen cylinders, and ventilators.
- Ability to be able to walk and stand for 75% to 100% of the 12-hour workday.
- The ability to hear breath sounds with a stethoscope, feel (palpate) for physical assessments, and see, read and interpret data in EMR and monitors.
Preferred Qualifications
- Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) Certification (or willing to obtain within 1 year)
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification (or willing to obtain within 1 year)
- Advanced certifications such as Neonatal/Pediatric Specialist (NPS) or Adult Critical Care Specialist (ACCS).
- Experience working in acute care hospital settings or intensive care units.
- Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
- Additional training in pulmonary rehabilitation or sleep disorder management.
- Excellent communication and patient education skills.
Responsibilities
- Follow and adhere to physician's/LIP's orders by implementing prescribed treatments, verifying orders that are ambiguous, and following established protocols while maintaining patient safety.
- Perform comprehensive respiratory assessments and develop treatment plans tailored to patient needs.
- Administer respiratory therapies including oxygen delivery, aerosol medications, and mechanical ventilation management.
- Monitor patient progress and adjust treatments accordingly while documenting all care activities accurately.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
- Maintain and troubleshoot respiratory equipment to ensure safety and effectiveness during use.
- Provides bedside respiratory care to patients as assigned by supervisors and given on the physician's written order for both in-house and out-patient care. Provides technical guidance and assistance to less qualified RT Staff (RRTs, RCPs).
Skills
The required skills enable the RRT to perform detailed patient assessments and deliver precise respiratory treatments effectively. Proficiency in operating and maintaining respiratory equipment ensures patient safety and treatment efficacy. Strong clinical judgment and critical thinking skills are essential for responding to emergencies and adjusting care plans dynamically. Preferred skills such as advanced certifications and EMR familiarity enhance the therapist's ability to manage complex cases and document care efficiently. Communication skills are vital for educating patients and collaborating with healthcare teams to optimize patient outcomes.
