About the Position

TravelNurseSource is working with job.com to find a qualified PACU/Pre-Post Op RN in New York!

The Registered Nurse (RN) will provide comprehensive care in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and Pre/Post-Operative settings . The RN will manage patients recovering from anesthesia, monitor vital signs, support surgical recovery, and ensure patient safety throughout perioperative care.

Key Responsibilities

PACU & Recovery Care

  • Manage Phase I & Phase II recovery (including pediatric PACU)
  • Perform airway assessment and monitoring
  • Monitor end-tidal CO₂ and cardiac rhythms
  • Recognize and manage dysrhythmias
  • Manage arterial lines and ventilated patients

Pre/Post-Operative Care

  • Conduct pre-operative assessments and patient education
  • Administer pre-op medications
  • Provide discharge instructions
  • Perform EKG/ECG and review history & physical
  • Perform urinary catheterization (male/female)

Clinical Specialties

Cardiac & Vascular

  • Cardiac monitoring and CPR
  • Carotid endarterectomy and vascular surgeries

Neurological

  • ICP monitoring and EVD management
  • Stroke scale assessment
  • Care for spine surgeries, craniotomies, cervical fusions

Respiratory

  • Ventilator care
  • Chest tube and tracheostomy management
  • ABG interpretation

Orthopedic

  • Joint replacements and fracture repairs
  • Circulation checks

Other Surgical Areas

  • Gynecology (hysterectomy, mastectomy)
  • Gastrointestinal (cholecystectomy, colon surgery, Whipple)
  • ENT, plastics, urology, and podiatry procedures

IV Therapy & Medication Management

  • Central line, PICC line, and port management
  • Blood product administration
  • IV insertion and maintenance
  • Administration of:
    • Antiarrhythmics
    • Anticoagulants
    • Vasopressors
    • Sedation and reversal agents
    • Opioid analgesics

Anesthesia Care

  • General, local, spinal, and nerve blocks
  • Conscious sedation and MAC
  • Post-epidural monitoring

Professional Skills

  • Lab value interpretation and communication
  • Pain management and PCA pump handling
  • Infection control (PPE/isolation protocols)
  • Sedation scale monitoring (RASS)
  • Malignant hyperthermia response

Requirements

  • Certifications:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • Experience in PACU / perioperative nursing
