University of Maryland Capital Region Health is seeking a motivated and highly skilled Orthopedic Physician Assistant (PRN) to join our multifaceted orthopedic service line in Largo, Maryland . This unique opportunity offers exposure to both the inpatient orthopedic setting and outpatient orthopedic clinic, allowing you to practice at the top of your license while working alongside an experienced team of orthopedic surgeons, advanced practice providers, nurses, and healthcare professionals.

As a PRN Orthopedic Physician Assistant, you will primarily provide coverage for 11-hour day shifts and will receive comprehensive training across all aspects of the orthopedic service to ensure seamless patient care and schedule coverage.

PRN Requirement: Providers must be available to work a minimum of one shift per quarter, staffing needs permitting.

Key Responsibilities:

In collaboration with the orthopedic physician team, the Advanced Practice Provider will:

• Provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive healthcare services for orthopedic and trauma patients
• Obtain comprehensive medical histories and perform physical examinations
• Conduct daily patient rounds and coordinate ongoing care
• Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests and imaging studies
• Develop treatment plans and initiate appropriate interventions
• Communicate effectively with physicians, nursing staff, patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams
• Perform advanced procedures within approved privileges, including Steinmann pin placement and other orthopedic interventions
• Educate and counsel patients and families regarding treatment plans and recovery expectations
• First assist in surgical procedures as needed
• Identify potential safety risks and proactively communicate concerns
• Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and patient safety programs
• Participate in APP Council meetings, service line meetings, educational activities, and organizational initiatives
• Serve as a mentor, educator, and resource for APP colleagues and learners when appropriate

Minimum Qualifications:

Required

• Bachelor's degree and graduation from an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program
• Current certification through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
• Current Maryland Physician Assistant licensure and registration

OR

• Current certification and licensure as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in Maryland

Additionally:

• Credentialing through the University of Maryland Capital Region Health Medical Staff Office
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications
• ATLS certification (may be obtained after hire)
• Participation in approved continuing medical education programs

Preferred:

• One year of orthopedic, surgical, emergency medicine, trauma, or critical care experience

Professional Development Requirements:

• Complete a minimum of 50 Category I CME hours every two years
• Complete 32 hours of trauma-related CME
• Maintain competency in orthopedic subspecialty practice and procedural skills
• Adhere to Maryland Board of Physicians or Maryland Board of Nursing standards and approved procedural protocols
