• Pay Rate: $58.00 / Hour (USD)
• Shift / Schedule: Night Shift, 3×12 Hours; 18:45–07:15. Every other weekend required; 2 Mondays and 2 Fridays in a 6-week period required.

Job Summary

This is a travel contract position on a primary cardiac and stroke unit at a busy medical facility. The unit is fast-paced, typically turning over 78 to 90 patients per week, meaning a nurse with a 6-patient assignment can end up turning over their complete assignment and starting over. A team lead is available to assist with admissions and discharges. The unit currently houses COVID-positive patients with the use of opti-flow and BIPAP. The high side (23-bed side) of CTU is a COVID unit that takes patients on opti-flow and acute BIPAPs during a COVID surge.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide care for stable pre/post procedure cardiac patients, including pacemaker implantation, implanted cardioverter/defibrillators, and cardiac catheterization; manage TR bands.
• Care for post uncomplicated interventional peripheral vascular procedure/cardiac interventions without sheath(s).
• Monitor and manage patients with non-rebreather mask with stable O2 saturation (must be on pulse ox), unstable angina, low-risk chest pain evaluation, CHF, dysrhythmias, all new CVA, and TIA patients.
• Run and titrate multiple cardiac drips, including Cardizem, Dopamine, Amiodarone, and others; titrate Cardizem drips independently.
• Perform IV starts and telemetry monitoring.
• Manage pre- and post-procedure cardiac patients, including cardiac drips and PCI.
• Utilize unit systems for medication, documentation, and communication: Pyxis, Dimensions (EPIC), SBAR.
• Operate and monitor special equipment including telemetry and pulse ox, High Flow O2 (stable), Non-Rebreather Mask (only if palliative), and BIPAP (chronic use only — no new BIPAP).
• Adhere to float requirement as assigned by unit leadership.
• Participate in self-scheduling per unit guidelines, with oversight from leadership to balance as needed; no block scheduling.
• Be available every day during week one for hospital orientation (36-hour orientation total).
• Comply with on-call requirements; frequency of on-call depends on patient census.

Required Skills

• IV Start proficiency
• Telemetry monitoring
• Experience with pre- and post-procedure cardiac patients
• Experience with cardiac drips (e.g., Cardizem, Dopamine, Amiodarone)
• Experience with PCI patients
• Comfortable managing patient ratios of 1:5–6, including surge ratios of 1:6
• Experience in a fast-paced, high-acuity unit with similar census/acuity levels
• Ability to titrate Cardizem drips
• Familiarity with Pyxis, Dimensions (EPIC), and SBAR communication

Education Requirements

• ACLS certification required
• BCLS certification required
• NIH Stroke Scale certification required
• Must pass EKG Testing prior to start for this specialty

Required Experience

• Minimum 2 years of experience required (challenging and very busy unit — must have similar experience with ratios/acuity)
• Travel nurse experience: first-time travelers accepted
• Locals accepted; rate difference may apply

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

• Target patient ratio: 1:5–6; ratios may fluctuate based on unit needs; travelers must be comfortable taking 6 patients during surge
• Unit accepts 13–26 week contracts
• 36 hours can be offered per week
• Night shift: 12-hour nights, 18:45–07:15
• RTO: 7-day maximum for AYA Auto Offer; no block scheduling
• RTO after booking is NOT allowed and is NOT allowed to be worked out onsite. Any call-offs or additional RTO on unit could possibly result in a cancel and DNR.
• On-call requirement: Yes; frequency depends on patient census
• Float requirement: Yes
• Weekend requirement: Every other weekend; 2 Mondays and 2 Fridays in a 6-week period required
• Unit is a primary cardiac and stroke unit; fast-paced with 78–90 patient turnovers per week
• Unit currently houses COVID-positive patients; use of opti-flow and BIPAP in effect
• Scrubs: Navy blue or white scrubs, or a mixture of both; Novant t-shirts are allowed all days of the week; jackets must be the same material (not fleece) and color as uniforms; no crocs with holes
• Unit orientation is 36 hours; travelers must be available every day during week one for hospital orientation
• Flu vaccine required (medical/religious exemptions only)
• COVID-19 vaccination: not required
