Medical Technologist /Histocompatibility Technologist

What You'll Do As a Medical Technologist / Histocompatibility Technologist, you will directly contribute to LifeLink’s life-saving mission. Under supervision, you will learn and perform all histocompatibility assays required for complete assessment of patients and donors for transplantation. Rotates on‑call duty to ensure laboratory services are continually available. Key Responsibilities Completes specialty training under the direct supervision of senior histocompatibility technologists and supervisors. Learns the principles of procedures and techniques currently used. Receives, logs, bills and prepares specimens for analysis, including stat blood and tissue samples from patients and deceased donors. Performs assigned laboratory procedures according to written protocols including HLA-ABC and DR Typing, ABO/Rh Typing, antibody screening by current methodologies, aliquoting and filing sera, crossmatching, and infectious disease testing. Performs those identified and cleared on the Histocompatibility Technologist Training Record and/or Competency Assessment Summary. Operates instruments according to established protocols. Prepares and uses proper standards and controls with each procedure necessary to determine proper performance of instruments, reagents, and tests. Rotates on‑call duties with other technologists. Carries a cell phone at all times when on call, responds to calls within 15 minutes of contact and must be able to report to work within 1 hour to perform histocompatibility and infectious disease assays under stat conditions. Effectively communicates and documents on‑call event timelines and test results. Checks all results and computer data entry for accuracy and reports results promptly to supervisor(s) and coordinators. Practices confidentiality and follows all safety precautions, rules and regulations as specified by LifeLink and laboratory policies. Participates in continuing education and proficiency testing programs. Who You Are Passionate about helping others and making a difference. Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree and Florida certification as a Technologist in histocompatibility, immunology/serology or immunohematology. Solid scientific grounding needed to learn appropriate technical procedures and to make decisions under supervision upon which critical medical decisions are based. Certification by the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI) as a Certified Histocompatibility Technologist (CHT) must be sought within three years of employment. Requires occasionally working under time restraints consulting with senior personnel to make critical decisions that impact patient care. Organs are assigned and surgeons operate based on decisions made by the technologist, therefore, the responsibility of being on call imposes some level of stress. Involves occupational exposure to reagent carcinogens, blood and other potentially infectious materials.
