Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) - Specialist
The EHS Specialist will support the Corporate Manager of Safety, Security & Loss Prevention in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the company's Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) programs.
This position will have a strong focus on OSHA and environmental compliance, including regulatory inspections, audits, hazard identification, incident investigations, training, recordkeeping, corrective actions, and environmental compliance activities. The EHS Specialist will work closely with management and employees to promote a safe and compliant workplace and support a strong culture of safety and environmental responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Corporate Manager of Safety, Security & Loss Prevention in maintaining compliance with applicable corporate, local, state, and federal EHS regulations, with a primary focus on OSHA and environmental compliance.
- Conduct regular facility safety inspections, compliance audits, hazard assessments, and risk assessments.
- Identify potential workplace hazards and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
- Track corrective actions and follow up with responsible parties to ensure timely completion.
- Assist with regulatory inspections, audits, and responses to regulatory findings.
- Maintain accurate EHS records, documentation, reports, and regulatory files.
- Monitor changes in applicable OSHA and environmental regulations and communicate relevant requirements to management.
- Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of EHS policies, procedures, and programs.
- Support environmental compliance programs and initiatives applicable to company operations.
- Assist with compliance related to hazardous materials, hazardous waste, stormwater, wastewater, air quality, chemical management, and other applicable environmental requirements.
- Assist with maintaining environmental permits, regulatory records, inspections, reporting, and corrective actions.
- Coordinate with outside environmental consultants, vendors, and regulatory agencies as necessary.
- Support environmental inspections, assessments, sampling, and reporting activities as required.
- Maintain environmental compliance documentation and ensure required records are complete and up to date.
- Identify opportunities to reduce environmental risks and improve compliance and sustainability practices.
- Support the development and implementation of safety programs and procedures.
- Write and develop materials for new safety programs and review and update existing programs as needed.
- Prepare and distribute safety program materials, instructional materials, handouts, evaluation forms, and visual aids.
- Maintain and update safety training programs.
- Conduct safety training sessions, including forklift and other applicable safety training.
- Provide EHS orientation and training to new hires.
- Train managers, supervisors, and leads on applicable safety requirements and responsibilities.
- Coordinate and distribute weekly safety training topics for employees.
- Support quarterly safety committee meetings and maintain appropriate documentation.
- Promote a culture of safety through communication, training, employee engagement, and proactive initiatives.
- Investigate workplace incidents, accidents, near-misses, and other safety events and prepare detailed reports.
- Assist with identifying root causes and developing corrective and preventive actions.
- Support the Corporate Manager with employee injury and workers' compensation activities, including issuing required documents, clinic authorizations, obtaining medical documentation, coordinating modified duty, filing first notices of loss, and responding to adjuster questions.
- Maintain accurate OSHA records and assist with OSHA recordkeeping requirements.
- Monitor safety metrics, including Lost Time Incidents, OSHA Recordables, First Aid cases, and Near Misses.
- Identify trends and recommend proactive measures to reduce workplace injuries and incidents.
- Collaborate with management to maintain and update emergency response plans.
- Support emergency drills, preparedness activities, and related training.
- Assist with management of change and hazard analysis activities.
- Support the evaluation of new equipment, processes, chemicals, and workplace changes from an EHS perspective.
- Assist the Corporate Manager in identifying opportunities for continuous improvement in EHS performance.
- Compile and analyze safety and environmental data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
- Prepare reports, presentations, and other EHS communications for management.
- Work collaboratively with operations, maintenance, HR, and other departments to address EHS concerns and implement corrective actions.
- Interact with outside vendors, consultants, and regulatory agencies as necessary to support EHS compliance.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Corporate Manager of Safety, Security & Loss Prevention.
This role is based at the Rancho Dominguez facility and may require occasional overnight travel to other locations in the U.S.
- Frequent exposure to a food production environment, including wet, cold, and humid conditions.
- Ability to work in cold storage areas for extended periods with appropriate PPE.
- Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and reach.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and with hazardous chemicals while following established safety protocols.
- Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required, including safety shoes, gloves, and protective eyewear.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Environmental Health, or a related field (preferred).
- 3+ years of experience in EHS, safety, environmental compliance, or a related field, preferably in a food processing, manufacturing, distribution, or FDA-regulated environment.
- Working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and other applicable federal, state, and local EHS regulations.
- Knowledge or experience with environmental compliance programs, including hazardous materials, hazardous waste, stormwater, wastewater, air quality, or chemical management, is preferred.
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate EHS requirements to employees, supervisors, managers, and leadership.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- OSHA 30-hour, CSP, ASP, CHMM, or other EHS-related certification is a plus.
