POSITION:

Assistant Professor of Horticulture: The Agriculture Program invites applications for a fulltime, tenure-track appointment in Horticulture at the rank of Assistant Professor. This is primarily a teaching position and the person appointed to the position will teach in some of the following areas: Integrated pest management, weed biology, tree and fruit crop production and management, principles of horticulture and practices, nursery production, crop physiology, plant breeding and agricultural propagation. Additional duties will include: course development, establishing an active student-focused experiential learning research program. Other responsibilities will include student mentoring and advising a highly diverse student population. Effective teaching, scholarly productivity, and service to the University are required for retention, promotion, and tenure. This is an academic year appointment. Opportunities may exist for additional grant-funded Summer activities and interdisciplinary projects on the 2-acre sustainable garden.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

PhD or equivalent degree required in Horticulture, Plant Science, Agronomy, Pomology or a closely related field. Applicants must also be able to demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence as evidenced by strong teaching evaluations by students. Applicants should provide evidence of experience or interest in serving a highly diverse majority minority student population. Candidates with ABD status will be considered beyond the initial round of review only if the dissertation advisor confirms the candidate is on track to complete all requirements for the PhD. All requirements for the PhD must be completed prior to the inception of the appointment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Preference is for candidates who provide evidence of effective teaching at the college level. Post-doctoral research, extension experience or teaching experience at the Junior college will strengthen an applicant’s candidacy, as will a strong background interest and work experience in production and management of crops commonly grown in California. Previous experience in working across disciplines to develop student experiential learning research programs is highly desired. COMPENSATION:

Commensurate with qualifications and experience. Anticipated hiring range is $ 6,584 - $7,111 per month for Assistant Professor (12 monthly payments per academic year). ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT and THE COLLEGE, CAMPUS, AND AREA: The Bachelor of Science in Agriculture is a multidisciplinary program blending contributions from several of academic departments in support of lower and upper division core courses serving four concentrations: Agricultural Biology, Agricultural Economics, Sustainable Agriculture, and General Agriculture. The program also depends on and fosters sustainable relationships with area community colleges through the implementation of a “2+2” curricular design.
