Responds to calls regarding stray, abandoned, or vicious animals. Sets traps for wild or domestic animals roaming at large. Brings animals back to shelter and holds them until owners claim, animal is adopted, or animal must be euthanized. Responds to calls regarding animals who have been injured. Determines whether to euthanize an animal based upon condition of injury. Investigates cases of animal abuse. Works with various agencies/organizations to ensure human treatment and potential adoption of animals. Investigates complaints regarding animals disturbing the public, biting persons, etc. Ensures animal is properly quarantined when rabies is a potential factor. Coordinates work with Health Department regarding rabies related cases. Issues summons to animal owners when problems persist regarding animal abuse or disturbances. Testifies in court as necessary regarding summons served and animal control situations. Educates citizens regarding animal control ordinances, humane treatment, and related issues when responding to calls to investigate strays, potential abuse, etc. Completes necessary paperwork for animal control duties to include reports of calls received, actions taken, animals picked up, euthanized, etc. Maintains cleanliness of animal shelter. Animal Control Officer Minimum Qualifications Thank you for your interest in becoming a member of the Isle of Wight County Sheriff's Office Animal Services Division. We have the occasion to hire certified Animal Control Officers as well as those that will require training to obtain such certification.The Sheriff’s Office is a Constitutional Office. We maintain a Memorandum of Understanding with the County of Isle of Wight to mange the county's Animal Shelter and Animal Control Officer Program. We provide excellent pay, benefits, and VRS retirement package. This is an armed position that requires certification with a handgun.
