In the department of architectural we have the Paint Shop.Position DescriptionThe Production Division within the Facilities and Operations Directorate has an opportunity to fill the position of a Painter A. This employee will work under minimum supervision and perform wide variety of interior and exterior skilled painting operations on buildings, furniture and laboratory equipment. Prepare surface, remove paint, mix paints and matches colors. Will use all methods of application as required. Must know use and application of paints, synthetics, bleaching materials, stains and similar products and proper use and care of painting equipment. Required to rig staging and scaffolding.The employee will be assigned to the day shift Monday – Friday 8am to 4:30pm. This position reports to the General Supervisor, Mechanical.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:* Under minimum supervision performs wide variety of interior and exterior skilled painting operations on buildings, furniture and laboratory equipment.* Surface preparation- Cleaning, sanding, scraping or removing old paint, repairing cracks, holes or other surface imperfections.* Mixing and matching paints- selecting and blinding paints to achieve the desired color and consistency.* Applying paint and finisher- Using brushed, roller, or spray equipment to apply paint, varnish, or other coating to walls, ceilings, furniture or exterior surfaces.* Protecting surrounding areas-covering floors, furniture and fixtures to prevent paint splatters.* Inspecting and maintaining painted surfaces- Touching up or reapplying coatings as needed to maintain appearance and protection.* Working safely using ladders, scaffolding and protective gear appropriately.* Reading plans or specifications- Following blueprint or instructions to ensure the correct color schemes and finishes.* Cleaning tools and workplace- Maintaining brushes, rollers, and work areas to future.The above list of duties is not all inclusive of every duty performed by this position, but it does include the major elements in the job.Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:* High School diploma or GED.* 6-yrs total experience composed:* 4-yrs apprenticeship plus 2-yrs experience, or* 4-6 yrs. total experience composed of formal trade school plus minimum 2 yrs. of experience, or* 6 yrs experience (no formal training).* Knowledge of a wide variety of interior and exterior skilled painting operations on buildings, furniture and laboratory equipment.* Ability to explain all steps necessary to complete a painting project from start to finish.* Possess good written and verbal communication skills, including:* Ability to follow written instruction procedures, work orders, and similar documents.* Ability to sufficiently write/complete work orders and other required documents.* Ability to communicate verbally with fellow workers and supervisors.* Must have a telephone and provide the number to BNL for callout and contact purposes.* Must be able to complete all the requirements of the Job Training Assessment.* Knowledge of:* Painting procedures* Painting tools and materials* Estimating and job planning* Painting calculations and painting techniques.* Demonstrated commitment to working safely, acting ethically, and taking personal accountability for operational excellence.* Possess a valid NYS driver's license.Environmental, Health, and Safety Requirements:Must meet physical requirements of the position, including but not limited to:* Standing, bending and lifting.* Ability to do heavy lifting > 30 lbs.* Ability to do moderate lifting < 30 lbs.* Ability to climb fixed and portable ladders.* Able to work outdoors/cold and warm environments.* Able to work around moving machinery.* Have physical coordination dexterity and balance.* Able to use power and hand operated hand-tools.* Able to operate fork trucks.* Ability to use a respirator.* Able to wear proper PPE such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and hearing protection and other related safety equipment.Other information:The successful applicant will be required to join IBEW Local 2230 and maintain membership within 30 days of their start date.The Lab’s placement policy is to select the best qualified candidate for an available position. With respect to Bargaining Unit positions, candidates are considered in the following order: (1) present benefits-eligible employees within the department/division and/or appropriate bargaining unit, with preference for those within the immediate work group; (2) present benefits-eligible employees within the Laboratory; and (3) outside applicants. The starting salary for this position is $46.48 per hour.
