Summary This LPN - Mental Health position is located at the Alvin C. York VA in Murfreesboro, TN. United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless proficient in basic written and spoken English. Education: Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). Exceptions: Health‑care education in the military service or training in the military service accepted by the licensing body in the jurisdiction in which the individual is licensed, as qualifying for full LPN/LVN licensure, or a license granted by a jurisdiction that does not require graduation from an approved school and has at least one year of successful practice as an LPN/LVN. Licensure: Active, full, current and unrestricted licensure as a Graduate Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (e.g., Puerto Rico) or the District of Columbia. Grade determinations: In addition to the basic requirements, the following criteria apply for each grade: GS‑03: None beyond the basic requirements. LPNs at this grade perform all duties within the scope of their license (e.g., medication administration). GS‑04: (a) Six months of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN; (b) Graduation from an approved school and one year of experience in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical‑nursing facility; or (c) Graduation from an approved school of at least 24 months duration. GS‑05: Knowledge and ability to provide a full range of practical nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems; serve as a responsible member of a nursing team and interact appropriately with patients, family, and support personnel; knowledge and skill for medication administration and documentation; recognition of the need for emergency measures; and response to equipment or supply deficiencies. GS‑06: Proficiency in initiating, performing, and completing assigned duties with variable patient populations; appropriate judgment in selecting procedures and treatments; observation and documentation of patient responses; emergency intervention skills; understanding of human behavior; and support duties for complex diagnostic tests. Physical Requirements: Must be physically and mentally able to perform efficiently; must lift at least 30 lbs; be able to twist, bend, stand, and walk almost constantly during the day. Duties Perform duties that promote quality health care, positive customer service, and an environment committed to serving veterans. Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of patient treatment plans as part of the interdisciplinary team. Interact with patients individually and in groups in accordance with treatment plans. Observe, identify, and respond to patients’ needs for nursing, medication, and equipment‑assisted care, and report deviations from normal. Use practical knowledge of human behavior, motivations, and reactions to work effectively with patients, families, and staff. Recognize and respond appropriately to emergency situations. Conduct patient care activities, including: Assist with data collection for outpatients and new admissions. Ensure patients’ privacy. Observe, report, and document signs and symptoms of patients’ general condition. Attend patient care conferences. Provide input into the Nursing Care Plan and/or Interdisciplinary Plan of Care. Provide direct nursing care to adult and geriatric patients, including: Bathing, showering, oral care, shaving, nail care, feeding, turning, positioning, and ambulating. Collecting and labeling specimens such as sputum, emesis, urine, and stools. Performing enterostomal care, perineal care, enemas, and colostomy irrigations. Providing bowel/bladder training, applying external urinary devices, and performing bladder catheterization. Providing oral, nasopharyngeal, and tracheal care. Administering oxygen and enteral feedings. Wound care and reporting changes to the RN. Applying abdominal binders, anti‑embolic stockings, ACE bandage, and pressure boots. Lifting, moving, transferring, and transporting patients. Using patient lifting devices, pressure‑relief mattresses, blankets, electronic scales, and feeding pumps.
