Lab – Phlebotomist

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws using straight needles or butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and sample quality
• Label specimens accurately, process and centrifuge specimens, and ensure proper storage according to established procedures
• Explain venipuncture and specimen collection processes clearly and courteously to patients
• Collect and store specimens such as urine and fecal samples as required
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, and prepare specimens for transport while maintaining sample integrity
• Check test requisitions against labels for accuracy and compliance
• Package and store specimens at appropriate temperatures, following protocols to preserve sample quality
• Adhere to OSHA and Department of Environmental Protection regulations, wear PPE, and maintain a sterile environment
• Attend annual departmental training sessions and update procedural knowledge regularly
• Answer patient and laboratory inquiries, interpret and relay laboratory results as needed
• Perform other duties as assigned to support laboratory operations

Required Skills

• Experience performing blood draws and specimen collection in a clinical setting
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy in labeling and processing specimens
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to put patients at ease
• Knowledge of laboratory procedures including centrifuging, specimen handling, and documentation
• Understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations related to laboratory safety and specimen handling

Additional Skills & Requirements

• Spanish speaking proficiency is preferred
• Pediatric experience is preferred
• High school diploma or equivalent required; formal phlebotomy certification is a plus
• Previous relevant experience in a fast-paced clinical environment preferred
• Available to work Monday through Saturday with varying shifts, including some Saturday shifts every first and third Saturday of the month
