Defect Operator I

Summary
The Defect Operator reduces defects caused by contamination through auditing, sampling, and analysis of production equipment and processes. Once issues are detected, this role supports implementation of improvement actions to reduce defects and prevent recurrence. The Defect Operator works closely with Production, Quality, and the Defect Engineer to audit contamination control practices, manage non-conformities, and follow issues through to resolution, and provides administrative support to the team.
Responsibilities
- Collect and analyze debris samples from production equipment
- Audit the production line for contamination control issues and support resolution
- Assist in root cause analysis and implementation of production equipment and process improvements under the guidance of the Defect Engineer
- Manage non-conformities using Microsoft Excel, and support and follow up with production teams to reach resolution
- Work with Production and Quality teams to address internal and external quality issues related to contamination
- Perform quality control checks on all magnets to ensure proper placement
- Read dials and meters to determine amperage, voltage, and electrical output and input at specific operating temperatures to analyze part performance
- Use specialized analysis tools such as microscopes and air flow meters to support contamination investigation
- Report audit results and project implementation status to the part leader
- Provide administrative support to the team, including documentation and record maintenance
- Maintain regular and reliable on-site attendance
- Maintain cleanliness at work-site in accordance with 5S3R Standards (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain; Right Location, Right Quantity, Right Container)
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Vocational Certificate or Associate degree preferred, or equivalent relevant experience
Experience
- Minimum 1 year of related experience in a manufacturing environment required
- Minimum 1 year of 5S implementation experience required
- Experience using specialized tools for analysis such as microscopes or air flow meters preferred
- Experience with contamination control, quality auditing, or defect investigation preferred
- Experience documenting or tracking non-conformities preferred
- Demonstrated reliable work history and consistent attendance in prior employment

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel for tracking and analysis
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to properly and regularly utilize the following PPE for periods of up to 12 hours: safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, nitrile gloves, ear protection, and cleanroom suit
- Must be able to repeatedly lift, push, and pull materials or equipment for periods of up to 12 hours
- Must be able to repeatedly stoop, twist, and bend for periods of up to 12 hours
- Must be able to repeatedly reach overhead for periods of up to 12 hours
- Must be able to stand, walk, and move throughout production areas for extended periods
- Must be able to sit and/or stand for extended periods
- Must be able to use hands and fingers to operate tools, equipment, and computer systems
Work Environment
- Work is performed in a climate-controlled manufacturing environment, including production and clean room areas
- Work may involve handling or working in proximity to hazardous materials and regulated industrial chemicals
- Exposure to chemical vapors, dust, or other controlled substances may occur depending on process assignment
- Strict adherence to company safety policies and OSHA Hazard Communication requirements is mandatory
- Employees must properly wear and maintain assigned personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times within designated areas
- Required PPE may include respirators, chemical-resistant garments, gloves, eye protection, face shields, or other equipment determined by process and risk assessment
- This position supports continuous manufacturing operations. Employees must be able and willing to work scheduled shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as business needs require
