Veterinary Student Externship- The Animal Hospital of Smithson Valley

United Veterinary Care invites veterinary students to participate in externships across our network of over 100 hospital locations in more than 20 states. This clinical experience allows you to apply classroom knowledge in a real‑world hospital setting of your choice. Externships are designed for clinical‑year students at AVMA‑accredited schools, typically in their 3rd or 4th year. At the start of each rotation you will share your goals with the team, and you will be integrated through case discussions, collaborative problem‑solving, and hands‑on patient care in general practice, emergency/critical care, and specialty settings. With opportunities at a wide variety of partner hospitals, you will gain diverse experience, mentorship, and confidence in your clinical skills. Students describe their externships as transformative and highly supportive. Stipends are available to offset travel and lodging costs (unless prohibited by your veterinary school). Eligibility Requirements Must be a current veterinary student at an AVMA‑accredited veterinary school Priority scheduling is given to students in their clinical years on official externship blocks for school credit Must provide proof of professional liability insurance. Located just outside of San Antonio in Spring Branch, TX, the Animal Hospital of Smithson Valley offers comprehensive care to a variety of species. The team provides advanced diagnostics, including ultrasound and endoscopy, and performs both soft‑tissue and orthopedic surgeries, dentistry, and preventive care. All staff members are valued contributors to client and patient care. Receive supervision from an experienced veterinarian and skilled support staff. Assist in surgical cases, dental procedures, emergency care, sick patient workups, and routine medical appointments. Discuss cases and findings with the supervising veterinarian to confirm exam results and receive guidance on treatment plans. Contribute to team knowledge sharing and collaborative decision‑making.
