Temporary BCOE Planting Seeds Intern - FRESH New London

The Bailey College of the Environment is seeking interns to serve in food justice organizations across the state through our Planting Seeds program. The intern is managed by their on-site supervisor, as well as a BCOE designated supervisor. The internship is part of a broader project building a network of food justice and environmental justice groups in CT and supporting student engagement. Interns will work on-site four days a week. One day a week, they will engage in a food justice curriculum with the BCOE Project Coordinator (Malana Rogers-Bursen) and the Professor of the Practice (Christine Caruso). Transportation and lunch provided for this course.FRESH Summer Youth Program interns will be a part of the planning, execution, and debrief of FRESH New London’s annual summer youth program. The program combines political education around food systems and collective sovereignty with hands-on experience in urban agriculture. Interns will work with our cohort of high-school aged students to grow, harvest, process, and distribute high quality, culturally relevant crops to the people of New London. They will also plan and co-facilitate workshops that strengthen our political education and critical lens of racist, capitalist systems that affect food access and quality of life. Finally, through FRESH’s Connecting Communities bucket, interns will attend events in New London, and get grounded in the ways that FRESH organizes around New London’s local city government.This job will require you to support the programs in FRESH New London, working with youth, the community, and partners.Responsibilities:Attending youth education spaces to further your own understanding* Through inhouse workshops* Out in the community with partners- To be trained on our message- Translate workshops for social media- One day trainingSupporting the day to day needs to allow for programs to run smoothly such as:* Support agricultural work where needed* Picking up snacks* Supporting youth with transportation* Being readily available for material pick up* Having weekly check ins with program heads (Youth program manager, Farmer, Director of Programs)* Being available for programs and days where they are interacting with the farm, the community ...etc.* Being another point person- Being a resource for young people to ask logistical questions- Asking as many questions as you need to feel clear on something- Checking in on crews wherever you have an instinct & reporting back to Chloë* Holding the connecting communities bucket:- Assisting with social media- general updates on the community- Creating flyers- Committee work in the New London People’s Budget Coalition as needed**Schedule & Availability:**The intern is required to work 37.5 hours a week, with 30 hours at their site and 7.5 hours rotating around the state for the workshop times.
