Laboratory Manager

Texas A&M University's Biology Department is seeking a Laboratory Manager who, under general direction, oversees and coordinates daily laboratory operations, instructional activities, and facility maintenance in support of the department's A&P courses. This role ensures laboratories are properly prepared, equipped, and maintained to provide a safe and effective learning environment for students and instructional staff.

Opportunities to Contribute

  • Supervises daily laboratory operations by overseeing course preparation, troubleshooting protocols, resolving laboratory issues, and coordinating maintenance needs to ensure efficient instructional support.
  • Leads and trains laboratory personnel, including full-time technicians, teaching assistants, student workers, and staff, while managing schedules, assignments, and technical training.
  • Coordinates student and instructional support activities by verifying laboratory absences, addressing teaching assistant concerns, preparing instructional and examination materials, and organizing makeup laboratory sessions.
  • Manages laboratory purchasing, inventory, and budget functions by ordering supplies, preparing requisitions, processing purchase orders, maintaining equipment inventories, and monitoring budget and course order records.
  • Collaborates with departmental leadership and university partners, including EHS and campus support offices, to support laboratory operations, compliance, and resource needs.
  • Maintains laboratory safety and regulatory compliance by overseeing annual chemical inventories, maintaining compliance records, and fulfilling reporting requirements.
  • Oversees course support resources by maintaining and updating online laboratory course components and ensuring instructional materials remain accessible and current.
  • Preserves and manages teaching collections and educational materials, including specimens, microslides, study skins, charts, anatomical models, and other instructional resources.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Five years of experience in medical or teaching laboratory settings.
  • May occasionally lift, move, and carry moderately heavy weight up to 50 lbs.
  • Requires frequent standing and walking around the instructional laboratories.

A well-qualified candidate for this position will also possess:

  • Master's degree in Biology or a related field.
  • Five years of teaching experience in high school or college-level laboratories in Biology, Chemistry, or a related field, to include a 2-year supervisory background.
  • Professional experience within human anatomy and physiology, animal physiology, embryology, or other related science field.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License.
  • CPR/First Aid certification, hazardous chemical training, and FAMIS training.
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
  • Demonstrated supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.

Salary: Compensation will be commensurate based on the selected candidate's education and experience.

Schedule: May have to work on the weekend and/or after normal hours to assist with exam setup or makeup laboratories.
