Protection Engineer - Senior Professional

This Opportunity WSP is currently initiating a search for a Protection Engineer - Senior Professional Electrical Engineer with a Protective Relaying emphasis for our Orlando, FL office. Candidates for our Augusta, ME; Freeport, ME; Syracuse, NY, Charlotte, NC; Overland Park, KS; and Richmond, VA offices will also be considered. The ability to work remotely from a mutually acceptable location will be considered (please note in the application questions where you prefer to be located). The successful applicant will have a direct role in the design, engineering, and studies of protection systems for equipment on the bulk power system. This includes the protection of substations, transmission lines, generators, renewables, and distribution systems. Your Impact Candidates for this role will have familiarity, experience, or possibly even expertise with some of the items listed below. However, we are realistic in our expectations of your professional experience, and do not expect you to have expertise or experience in all of these areas. A willingness to learn in areas where you do not have experience and to teach others in areas where you do have experience is essential to being successful on our team. Protective Relaying: Symmetrical component analysis, protection philosophy development, relay settings, and integration with SCADA systems. Protection Analyses: Electrical model development, short circuit, time–current coordination, arc flash, NERC compliance, and event analysis. Leadership: Lead teams on client projects to meet the scope, schedule, and budget. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers. Data Acquisition: Support infrequent onsite site visits to collect data and be able to discuss project specifics at an appropriate technical level for clients. Industry Standards: Working knowledge or awareness of applicable industry practices for protection as outlined in IEEE, ANSI, or NERC PRC standards for design work. Organized: Flexibility to support a variety of project schedules to meet client needs and ability to prioritize responsibilities effectively. Applicable software: AcSELeratorQuickset, GE Enervista, ASPEN Oneliner, CAPE, SKM-PTW, ETAP, RSCAD. Applicable hardware: SEL, GE, Siemens, RTDS. Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Who You Are Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET accredited). 5 to 7 years of relevant post‑education experience as an electrical engineer executing deliverables for Protective Relaying projects in power generation, transmission, and distribution at a utility or industrial scale. Engineer in Training certification. Occasional travel may be required depending on project‑specific requirements. Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies. Preferred Qualifications Master’s Degree in Engineering. Professional Engineering (PE) license or equivalent. Preference will be given to applicants with a proven history of completing similar projects in a consulting environment. Preference may be given to engineers with commissioning and testing experience, or strong skills in protecting equipment at high voltages (69 kV and higher). Preference is also given to applicants with experience mentoring others and a willingness to do so. Compensation Expected Salary (New York Only): $94,300 a yr – $155,500 a yr.
