Electronic Control Systems Technician (Corrections) (240001AW) Position Grade: 208T Department: City Justice Center Job Type: Full-Time (Permanent) Examination Number: EX1333 Location: Downtown - St. Louis, MO This position is selected for the Hiring Incentive Program. The incentive shall be in the amount of three thousand dollars ($3000.00) upon completion of the probationary period. The hiring incentive will be paid (if funds are available) by the Department/Division which appoints the applicant. The hiring incentive is not available to current City employees. Incumbents in this position design, program, install, maintain and repair radio, electronic and mechanical control systems and system instruments and devices requiring an in-depth knowledge of computer-based control systems design and programming. Essential Functions and Responsibilities Monitors, adjusts and calibrates a variety of electronic control, data and monitoring systems; ensures that systems meet established operational parameters. Performs on-site diagnoses and repair of electronic instruments such as air quality and monitoring system instruments and control and data system instrumentation; replaces devices to restore operation. Installs new electric, electro-mechanical, and electronic instrumentation and telemetry equipment such as samplers, generator units, field test systems, control and data acquisition equipment; fabricates and mounts apparatus and cabinets for the installation of equipment. Gathers data from monitoring locations; records and retrieves readings; generates data reports; operates sampling equipment. Installs and tests cabling using test equipment such as a fiber optic line tester, multi-meter, toner and coaxial line tester. Works with contractors and engineers to ensure proper installation and performance of equipment. Maintains security system and its components at City Justice System (CJC). Maintains the Building Automation System at CJC. Maintains servers, software and hardware for the intercom system, card readers and doors. Maintains software and hardware for programmable logic controllers. Maintains software and hardware for video recording system. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Data Utilization: Performs mid-level data analysis including auditing, deducing, assessing, concluding and appraising; discerns established criteria to define consequences and develop alternatives. Human Interaction: Explains, demonstrates and clarifies to engineers, consultants, vendors, contractors and co-workers within established policies, procedures and standards; follows specific instructions and responds to simple requests. Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Operates equipment and machinery requiring monitoring multiple conditions and making multiple, complex and rapid adjustments; repairs complex equipment and machinery. Verbal Aptitude: Utilizes advisory data and information such as flow charts, control drawings, mechanical prints and technical manuals. Mathematical Aptitude: Performs basic arithmetic, decimals, percentages, algebra and geometry. Functional Reasoning: Applies principles of rational systems; interprets instructions in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form; exercises independent judgment. Situational Reasoning: Exhibits judgment, decisiveness and creativity when evaluating information against measurable criteria. Environmental Factors: Tasks may involve exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as heat, cold, noise, dusts, machinery, bright or dim light and electrical currents during installation, maintenance and repair activities. Physical Requirements: Exerts sustained physical effort handling 20–50 pounds; stoops, kneels, crouches, climbs, and bends for installation, maintenance and repair; prolonged visual concentration while monitoring and operating computer systems. Sensory Requirements: Recognizes and identifies similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, sounds and odors; distinguishes objects at close and far ranges for instrument control and vehicle operation. Qualifications An Associate’s degree in Electronic Engineering Technology or completion of a two‑year training program in electronics from a recognized trade school; or two years of experience maintaining and repairing Building Automation Control Systems. License Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid Missouri driver’s license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Must be able to present a valid driver’s license upon request.
