Diesel Mechanic

The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and overhaul of diesel-powered vehicles, equipment, generators, and support systems utilized in facility operations. This position provides technical competencies to ensure equipment reliability and safety and supports mission-critical operations within a highly regulated industrial and government environment.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Perform diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on diesel engines, generators, heavy equipment, trucks, utility vehicles, and associated systems.

Troubleshoot and repair fuel, hydraulic, cooling, exhaust, electrical, and powertrain systems.

Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on designated emergency back-up diesel powered equipment.

Conduct inspections and ensure equipment complies with operational and safety requirements.

Diagnose equipment failures using computerized diagnostic tools and testing equipment.

Coordinate equipment repairs to minimize downtime and maintain operational readiness.

Maintain maintenance records, inspection reports, and work orders in computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).

Support equipment commissioning, testing, and startup activities.

Ensure compliance with environmental regulations governing fuels, oils, lubricants, and hazardous materials.

Assist with inventory management of parts, tools, and maintenance supplies.

Coordinate with operations, engineering, and maintenance teams to resolve equipment issues.

Education and Experience

Must be a US Citizen

High School Diploma or GED.

Technical training in diesel technology, heavy equipment maintenance, or a related field preferred.

Minimum 7–10 years of diesel mechanic experience in industrial, government, construction, utility, military, or heavy equipment environments.

Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, fuel systems, electrical systems, and power generation equipment.

Experience using computerized diagnostic equipment and maintenance software.

Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Certification(s).

Diesel Technician Certification from a recognized technical institution.

Experience maintaining standby and emergency diesel generators.

Experience supporting federal, DOE, industrial, utility, or nuclear facilities.

Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

OSHA 30-Hour certification.

Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Advanced troubleshooting and repair skills for diesel-powered equipment.

Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and maintenance documentation.

Knowledge of preventive maintenance programs and equipment reliability practices.

Ability to prioritize work assignments and manage multiple projects.

Strong commitment to safety, quality, and environmental compliance.

Desired Certifications

ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Certifications, CDL, OSHA 30-Hour, EPA Certifications (if applicable), CPR/First Aid, and manufacturer-specific diesel engine training (e.g., Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit Diesel, John Deere).

Area Security

Access: Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE “Q” security clearance. An active DOE clearance is not initially required to perform assigned duties. After award, the selected candidate will be notified when to apply for a clearance based on specific work assignments

Work Hours

A 40-hour work week is scheduled. SRNS utilizes various work schedules including 5/8s (8 hour/day; five days per week), 4/10’s (10 hours/day; four days per week), and 9/80’s (9 hours/day, five days on week AA and four days on week BB. Work week excludes SRNS holidays. Each workday has 30 minutes lunch. Overtime will be expected at times to meet deliverables and will be utilized at the discretion of the Manager.

Work Environment / Physical Demands

The Diesel Mechanic supports critical site infrastructure and fleet operations in a highly regulated industrial and government environment. The position requires adherence to strict safety, environmental, quality assurance, and security requirements while ensuring the reliability and availability of diesel-powered equipment and emergency support systems.

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

Ability to work in shop, field, and outdoor environments.

Ability to climb, crawl, kneel, bend, and work in confined spaces.

Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, lifting devices, and diagnostic equipment.

Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
