Registered Nurse Psychiatric

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse at Montana State Hospital provides nursing assessment, planning, interventions, and evaluation for adult clients in a psychiatric inpatient setting. The role includes supporting clients in maintaining a therapeutic environment, assigning work, and providing direction and training to subordinate nursing personnel. The nurse is expected to deliver skilled nursing care with a strong focus on psychopharmacology, patient rights, and effective communication. This position requires licensure in Montana and relevant experience in mental health or related fields. Responsibilities:

• Perform nursing assessments, planning, interventions, and evaluations for adult psychiatric clients.
• Support and maintain a therapeutic environment for clients.
• Assign work and provide direction and training to subordinate nursing personnel.
• Administer medications and implement treatment plans.
• Document patient assessments and nursing care accurately and thoroughly.
• Communicate effectively with patients, providers, and interdisciplinary team members.
• Utilize patient care information systems proficiently.
• Adhere to patient rights and current psychopharmacology standards.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Montana.
• Graduate of an accredited college or university with a degree in nursing.
• Minimum of 2 years direct experience in mental health settings or relevant experience as outlined:
  • At least 2 years in mental health facilities, or
  • At least 5 years in geriatric care (long-term care, hospice), or
  • At least 4 years in emergency or urgent care settings.
• Knowledge of nursing, medications, treatment planning, and patient rights.
• Skill in nursing instruments and equipment use.
• Ability to perform accurate patient assessments and documentation.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency with technology related to patient care information systems.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Experience working with psychiatric inpatient treatment programs.
• Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification.
• Additional specialty certifications such as Psych Tech, CNA, MHT, or BHT.

Special Considerations:

• Shift differential may be available.
• One meal provided per shift.
• Must be able to work effectively in a psychiatric inpatient environment.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate within an interdisciplinary team.

Scheduling:

• 12-hour shifts from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM.
• Work schedule is 36 hours on, 48 hours off.
