Registered Nurse

The job of Registered Nurse was established for the purpose of assessing the health needs of students; developing emergency care plans and individual health plans, incorporating input from parent and/or physician; complying with the laws relating to student health, including parental and guardian consent; providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured students; providing health information and serving as a resource to teachers, staff, and administrators; and identifying health problems for referral for proper treatment.

Essential Functions

• Administers first aid, medication, and specialized medical treatments for providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile, and/or injured children.
• Administers mandated screenings for referring medical conditions and/or providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile, and/or injured children.
• Assesses situations involving students' safety, abuse, and other health-related issues for identifying problems, referring for proper treatment, and complying with legal requirements.
• Collaborates with parents, students, health care providers, and/or public agencies for promoting and/or securing student health services, providing information and complying with legal requirements.
• Conducts age-appropriate programs and/or activities in conjunction with classroom curriculum for supporting established lesson plans.
• Develops and oversees the implementation of individual student care plans for addressing students' health needs, providing direction to site personnel, and implementing directions/orders provided by physicians with parent input.
• Maintains contact with parents/guardians, physicians, and caregivers for advising them of changes in student health and/or recommending further medical and/or emotional intervention.
• Maintains students' confidential files and records for providing information required by legal requirements and professional standards.
• Monitors site assessments for identifying issues and/or providing recommendations for improving safety and accessibility.
• Monitors students with acute and chronic illnesses for assisting the child in achieving the highest possible functional level.
• Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops and seminars for gathering, conveying, and/or sharing information on student's health needs, service delivery, and educational programs, and/or improving skills and knowledge.
• Prepares and submits district, state, and federal reports for ensuring that all information is correct and submitted according to established guidelines and procedures.
• Provides training on a variety of health-related subjects for promoting a safe and healthy lifestyle and/or acting as a resource to students, teachers, and other school personnel.
• Refers to students requiring additional medical attention for providing required follow-up treatment and services.
• Reports health and safety issues to assigned administrators and appropriate agencies for maintaining student's personal safety, a positive learning environment and complying with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.
• Researches a variety of topics relating to health and medical care for providing information to staff, students, parents, and the public.
• Responds to emergency medical situations for ensuring appropriate immediate medical attention and related follow-up action.

Performs other related duties as assigned for ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
