CERTIFIED ALCOHOL AND DRUG COUNSELOR

Summary: The Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC or CAADC) at Catholic Social Services of the Upper Peninsula provides services to a diverse client population with substance use and addiction challenges, including individuals with co-occurring disorders and trauma histories, within a clinical setting. Responsibilities: Offer recommendations to maintain or enhance substance use disorder treatment, relapse prevention, and recovery programming for the agency. Guide, coach, and counsel clients to support safe, drug-free lifestyles. Manage a caseload of assigned clients, ensuring coordination of resources and actions aimed at achieving client goals. This may involve referring clients to additional services within CSSUP or external agencies, as well as consulting with other professionals regarding client concerns and needs. Conduct intake interviews with clients, collecting biopsychosocial and spiritual information. Evaluate client information to determine diagnoses, identify problems, strengths, and needs. Develop individualized treatment plans in collaboration with clients, establishing mutually agreed-upon goals, objectives, and interventions. Provide individual and group therapy sessions to help clients meet their treatment plan objectives. Offer safe and effective crisis counseling within the outpatient setting. Lead client education sessions, both individual and group, to inform clients and families about various aspects of substance abuse, addiction, and recovery. Maintain accurate client records in accordance with agency policies. Promote the program through community education, prevention, and outreach activities as needed. Serve as a positive role model for clients. Comply with the Code of Ethics relevant to the profession, CSSUP policies, and applicable state and federal laws regarding confidentiality and client rights. Attend relevant training and educational programs to maintain certification through the Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP). Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications: Certification as a CADC, CAADC, or completion of an MCBAP-approved Development Plan. Willingness to complete training to serve clients with addiction behaviors, including but not limited to gambling, pornography, or substance abuse. Experience providing client-centered, empathetic services; experience with both mental health and addiction services is preferred. Understanding of and ability to operate within the ethical guidelines established by the profession, MCBAP, CSSUP, and applicable laws. Ability to serve as an effective role model for clients. Commitment to responsible use of alcohol and abstinence from illicit substances. If in recovery, a minimum of one year of continuous abstinence from all mind-altering substances (excluding properly prescribed medications) and a demonstrated lifestyle based on recovery are required. Sensitivity to and awareness of the cultural needs of the local community, including considerations for populations such as children, seniors, Native Americans, and others. Credentialing requirements: Certification as a CADC, CAADC, or completion of an MCBAP-approved Development Plan.
