Position Summary: As a key member of Disability Services Case Management team and under general supervision, the Case Manager will provide case management services for students with a range of disabilities enrolled in clinical and didactic programs on the CUIMC campus, including medical, dental, nursing, and other health sciences programs. This position is integral to furthering accessibility and inclusion for students with disabilities at Columbia and will work closely with faculty, clinical training sites, and University partners to remove barriers to learning, clinical training, co-curricular programs, and resources.

Responsibilities:

Case Management (75%):

• Manage academic accommodations as defined by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act for a large caseload of students registered with Disability Services.
• In consultation with the Assistant Director for Case Management, develops comprehensive disability case management strategies and facilitates accommodation and support services for students with a range of disabilities; supports students through a variety of interventions, referrals, advocacy and follow-up services.
• In consultation with the Assistant Director, reviews highly sensitive and confidential disability documentation to determine disability status and need for accommodations.
• Develop, implement, update, and evaluate accommodation plans with students and faculty.
• Participates in case reviews to assess, plan, implement, coordinate, monitor, and evaluate students' accommodation needs.
• Develops plans for individual students' academic and personal accommodations in concert with other advisors as needed.
• Advises students on rights and responsibilities regarding academic accommodations, departmental policies and procedures, and University policies, disclosure, disability management, reasonability, and the grievance processes.
• Documents and maintains timely and accurate electronic student records, including records of activities with students, communications, documentation, and meeting notes.
• Makes appropriate referrals to university support services and off-campus professionals as needed.
• Responsible for ensuring accommodations letters are issued according to the departmental procedures.

Compliance/Awareness/Outreach (15%):

• Maintains professional expertise in matters pertaining to federal and state regulations and policies affecting persons with disabilities, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act, including ADA standards and regulations pertinent to students with disabilities in higher education.
• Provides ongoing technical assistance to faculty, class deans, and other advisors regarding the University's obligations to students with disabilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
• Performs outreach to students, faculty, and staff and represent Disability Services at orientation and other events.
• Serves as a liaison to other University departments and divisions to facilitate services for students with disabilities; interfaces regularly with faculty and University administrators, including Student Health on Have, Public Safety, Housing, Facilities, as well as clinical training sites on disability and accommodation issues.

Other (5%):

• Provides cross-functional and other auxiliary accommodations services such as assisting with the administration of exam accommodations during peak operational volume, coordinates course-specific accommodations, note-taking, and classroom accommodations.

Performs other responsibilities as assigned (5%)

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent experience in Counselor Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education or closely related field.
• Minimum of 3 years of related experience required.
• Knowledge of Section 504, ADA regulations, and other relevant laws pertaining to disability in higher education.
• Familiarity with evaluating medical documentation to determine eligibility for academic and non-academic accommodations.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Demonstrates sensitivity to, and understanding of, working with students of diverse backgrounds, academic performance, and disabilities, with experience with both traditional and non-traditional students.
• Demonstrates ability to take initiative, use critical thinking, and exercise astute independent judgment in handling situations not covered by verbal or written instructions.
• Able to handle a high-volume workload; manage concurrent demands, multiple stakeholders, while working as part of a team.
• Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
• Position requires strong computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's degree in Counselor Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education or closely related field.
• Knowledge of technical standards applicable to health professional education programs, and experience determining reasonable accommodations within clinical training requirements.
• Experience providing case management or disability services for students in medical, dental, nursing, or other health sciences programs.
• Experience in the provision of services for students with disabilities in a college or university setting.
• Case management.
