Communications Officer

The Newberg-Dundee Police Department seeks a Communications Officer (Telecommunicator) who holds a current Oregon DPSST Basic Telecommunicator Certification. Successful applicants will receive a taxable hiring bonus of $2,500 in the first payroll period, and a second $2,500 bonus upon completion of the 18-month probationary period. Job Responsibilities Operate communication equipment to receive and process 9-1-1 and non-emergency calls. Perform dispatch duties and maintain accurate records for police, fire, and emergency medical response as well as other agencies. Route calls to the appropriate agencies and provide pre-arrival instructions for medical calls in accordance with APCO procedures. Ask professional questions, gather required information, and enter data into computer terminals. Use CAD, radio, telephone, mobile dispatch terminals and other tools to maintain contact with units. Monitor cameras in holding cells, alert on-duty officers of concerns, and perform other duties as assigned by supervisors. Qualifications High-school graduate or equivalent. Valid Oregon DPSST Basic Telecommunicator Certification. Bi-lingual ability in English and Spanish preferred. Experience in a multi-task, public service or customer service environment. DPSST Telecommunications Intermediate Certification (preferred). Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen, background check, obtain CJIS clearance, and maintain LEDS, APCO and DPSST certifications. Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime and maintain predictable employment. Strong listening, communication, judgment and decision-making skills, and ability to remain calm in stressful situations. Typing speed of at least 45 words per minute. Physical Demands Sit at a desk for extended periods; occasional walking, standing, stooping, lifting up to 25 lbs. Use tools or equipment requiring dexterity and sustain focused attention. Meet all physical standards set by the State of Oregon DPSST for visual, hearing, speaking, and stamina requirements. Work Environment Stationary dispatch station with headsets, computer terminals, monitors, two-way radio, multi-line phone system, and CAD. Rotating shifts providing 24/7 coverage over weekends and holidays; overtime may exceed regular shift. Normal working conditions with varying noise and lighting levels; occasional travel for meetings and training.
