Compliance Inspector III / Field Investigator (Mechanical Trades) Salary: $70,016.90 per year ($5,834.74 per month) – $73,702 per year ($6,141.83 per month) (Full‑time, Regular) Unclassified Summary: Enforces the Oklahoma Mechanical Licensing Act. Works with local public and private groups to coordinate and educate on licensing and code standards. Gathers information, prepares reports, and testifies at hearings on licensing violations. Home‑based duty station in Oklahoma, likely southeast region; specific counties to be determined. Extensive in‑state travel and occasional overnight travel. Must pass a criminal history background check. Typical Functions Enforce mechanical licensing and code standards by traveling to and physically inspecting construction worksites. Receive and investigate complaints regarding licensing and code standards. Issue citations and prepare Notice of Violation reports. Interpret mechanical codes, laws, and installation instructions. Conduct plan reviews when requested. Evaluate installations and prepare citations for non‑compliance. Collaborate with city inspectors, other government entities, contractors, and clients such as general contractors, sub‑contractors, job superintendents, engineers, and architects to provide information and education. Inspect construction sites to ensure compliance with applicable licensing laws and statewide construction codes. Coordinate with state agencies and local governments to compare and align activities of mutual interest. Make oral presentations and reports to the CIB Board and other stakeholders. Attend trade‑related organization meetings to network and develop consistency in performance. Plan, organize, and manage time and travel to cover assigned counties with supervisor approval. Enter information into computer databases and prepare summaries, travel reports, activity reports, and time reports for supervisory approval. Obtain supervisory approval of citations, present citations to hearing committees, and testify at trade hearings. Demonstrate support and cooperation with the CIB Board, staff, industry partners, and customers while maintaining a professional demeanor. Perform additional duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Comprehensive knowledge of investigative methods, state‑adopted construction codes, mechanical theories, and industry regulations governing installation, maintenance, and repair. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, follow written and oral instructions, and apply trade theories to a construction job site. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, laws, codes, and ordinances accurately. Commitment to good judgment, attention to detail, and adherence to the code of ethics, employee handbook, and state core values. Physical stamina to drive, walk, stand, climb, crawl, push, pull, and lift for extended periods. Professional communication skills that avoid accusations, criticisms, and gossip, and that are respectful and within the scope of the employee handbook. Minimum Qualifications Current, unexpired license as a mechanical journeyman or mechanical contractor in Oklahoma for a minimum of five years. Knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above. Reliable transportation and a valid Oklahoma driver’s license. No serious violations or disciplinary actions under any Oklahoma licensing act or industry regulation within the last five years. Within one year of hire, obtain both a national certification in residential and commercial mechanical inspection and a State of Oklahoma license as Residential Mechanical Inspector and Unlimited Mechanical Inspector; provisional license if not already held upon hire. Preferred Qualifications Unlimited classification involving industrial, commercial, and residential HVAC/R. Completion of a committee‑approved mechanical (HVAC) vocational program of one thousand hours or more, a U.S. Department of Labor approved mechanical training course, an accredited mechanical vocational program, or 30 semester hours at an accredited college or university in courses related to design, installation, and construction of mechanical systems.
