Maintenance Technician

The Maintenance Technician performs preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair on steel plate and steel coil manufacturing equipment, including plasma tables, steel coil lines, and some forklift equipment. Approximately 75% of the time is spent in the production area, handling preventive maintenance tasks and responding to equipment breakdowns to support safe, efficient, and continuous operations.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance on plant equipment, including lubrication, monitoring, repairing, and completing inspections according to established schedules.
• Troubleshoot and repair steel plate and steel coil manufacturing equipment, including plasma tables, steel coil lines, and related machinery.
• Support maintenance activities on forklifts and other mobile equipment as needed.
• Identify potential equipment problems during inspections and routine work, and proactively initiate improvement projects to enhance reliability and performance.
• Complete work orders accurately and in a timely manner, documenting maintenance activities, parts used, and findings.
• Communicate regularly with equipment Operators to ensure a smooth and constant flow of operations and to understand equipment performance and issues.
• Question and observe the operation of equipment to detect abnormal conditions, problems, or concerns before they lead to failures.
• Perform general mechanical maintenance, including work on motors, hydraulics, pneumatics, and other industrial systems.
• Utilize troubleshooting skills, including basic PLC troubleshooting where applicable, to diagnose and resolve equipment issues.
• Carry out welding tasks as needed for equipment repair and maintenance, when qualified to do so.
• Follow all safety procedures and best practices while working in and around industrial equipment and production areas.
• Collaborate with maintenance and production team members to prioritize tasks and allocate resources effectively.
• Support project-based work around the plant, particularly on Fridays when production is not running.

• 1+ year of maintenance experience for the apprentice-level role or 10+ years of maintenance experience for the experienced Maintenance Technician role.
• Hands-on experience with preventive and preventative maintenance in an industrial environment.
• Mechanical troubleshooting skills for industrial equipment, including motors and moving machinery.
• Experience working with hydraulics and pneumatic systems.
• Ability to perform general industrial maintenance, including lubrication, monitoring, repairing, and inspections.
• Experience responding to equipment breakdowns and restoring equipment to service safely and efficiently.
• Ability to communicate clearly with Operators and maintenance team members to support continuous operations.
• Capability to complete work orders accurately and maintain clear maintenance documentation.
• Basic understanding of electrical systems as they relate to industrial equipment maintenance.

• PLC troubleshooting experience (nice to have).
• Welding experience (nice to have).
• Experience maintaining overhead cranes, plasma tables, and forklifts (preferred).
• Experience working in an industrial or heavy manufacturing environment.
• Comfort working in a large warehouse setting with varying temperatures.

Work Environment

This role is based in a large, industrial warehouse originally built to accommodate very large-scale fabrication work. The facility is old-school and expansive, with heavy steel plate and coil manufacturing equipment such as plasma tables, coil lines, overhead cranes, and forklifts. The position follows a mid-shift schedule on a 5x8 workweek. Training occurs on first shift (approximately 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.) for 30 to 90 days, depending on experience, after which the schedule transitions to a start time around noon or 1:00 p.m. Once trained, Fridays are focused on project-based work around the plant, as production does not operate that day. The work takes place indoors and out of direct exposure to the elements, but the temperature in the building varies with the seasons; it is hot in the summer and cold in the winter due to large doors frequently opening and closing and limited temperature control. The environment is industrial and physically active, involving regular presence in the production area around heavy machinery and equipment.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Saint Paul, MN.

The pay range for this position is $29.76 - $38.81/hr.
